What is a pendulum sight?

I see them advertised, but I don't understand how they work.

the sight pin will pivot at the top and compensate for the difference in yardage to the target in a tree stand situation ie. sharp up hill or down hill angles. They do work but If get used to shooting from a tree stand and you're not 45 feet in the air to begin with you usually don't need them.
