Washington/Oregon shed hunters

Hey Guys,
I've got major shed-hunting blues. I don't expect the same quality of shed-hunting I did in Utah, Wyo. and Arizona, but I just moved to SW Washington and this will be my first shed hunting season in the Northwest. I plan on competing for some of the Roosevelt elk antlers in the nearby units later on but I wonder what other kind of opportunities are available within 5-6 hrs drive. What I would really like to know is if any experienced shed-hunter out there is looking for a shed-hunting buddy. I haven't made too many hunting buddies yet, my wife enjoys that but I'm ready to pound the hills for some bones! Thanks guys.

BBB...no love here from the Oregon shed hunters. You need to move back to Cache Valley :)

There is plenty of good areas within 5 hours of the Portland area. Email me at [email protected] and I can give you some spots. We went out a couple days ago and we saw a few one horned bucks and maybe one that shed both sides so they are starting to drop.

Thanks ORhornhog,
I sent you a PM.
Antlerking, This time of the season I am missing those treks across the country in search of bones. Any luck yet? Any moose in your hotspots?

As far as freshies go, I wouldnt even waste your time until spring break and even then I find myself leaving an area because their are to many animals are still packing. The deer around here are also the same although they do drop a little earlier. When these guys posts threads of freshies now it really hard for me to believe because are NEVER drop before end of Feb. As far as where to go. If you want to chase Large antlers you need to concentrate your efforts in areas like Mt. Emily, or the Walla Walla Until.

There is a little river called the Walla Walla river that runs through Milton Freewater. If you follow the south fork all the way up you will hit a state park. You can camp here and is a great jumping off spot for sheds(extremly rugged though). Some of the largest Oregon sheds come out of this area around the park every year. It should be a good year because lots of snow in places like Tolgate will move the elk down on to the south facing slopes. Get a good map or two an plan a weekend and you should do pretty good!

Good Luck,

Jon

If I could schedule it in I would go with you on a weekend trip up into the walla wall river country.

You may not find ALOT of sheds but when you do odds are they are gonna be BIGGG!!!

Thanks for the tips Traks, I'll keep in touch with you and when the time comes see if you'd like to join me.

Traks,
I know what ur saying about them usually not shedding this time of year. But I myself have found freshies two days after I'd been in the exact spot so I know they're dropping.

Michael~All Gods creatures welcome... right next to the mashed potatoes and gravy.

Alright,
leaving tom. night (Fri. night) or sat early morning for a day and a half shed trip in Or. Anyone interested in going?
