Washington Elk

Well I am back from my backcountry elk hunt, WHAT A YEAR. My hunting partner shot a 6 x 6 that will go around 320. I will post photos when he brings them by.

This was the most amazing season I have ever had. I spent 8 days in the backcountry and called in 12 bulls under 30yds. What is even more amazing was that not one of them presented a shot. overall I saw 20 legal bulls and some of them were tremendous. This was the type of hunt you would pay many thousands of $'s to go on and it was only a couple hours from home.

Was this the experience everyone was having in Washington? This was the most vocal I have ever heard the bulls. I have been hunting this area for the last few years, in a typical year I would see 5 or 6 bulls and feel great about it.

Everyone seems to be so concerned about the quality of their calling skills. My firm belief is, if the bulls are ready it ain't that important. Mid week I had hiked the trail in the dark for a few miles. It was just getting to be shooting light so I reached for my bugle and realized I had left it at camp. I let out a lone cow call with my reed and instantly had a bull return with a bugle. When it was all over I ended up squeking out a bugle with no tube chuckling and after an hour of having this bull under 40 yds he finally came in to a close 20yds and never presented a broadside shot. I fully believe I could have called that bull in with only my mouth. My suggestion is, don't be shy about calling And use that cow call, most of these bulls responded much better to the cow call than the bugle. Only a few of the bulls were vocal before I called.

I may not have the bull I was hoping for but I had so much fun, I learned more about calling in one season than I had in a life time. Next year will not get here fast enough.

Wow! Sounds like a great hunt. I cant wait myself (rifle season). Hearing stories like that make me want to switch to archery, but I swore until I take one with a rifle it aint going to happen. I have a few good areas to hunt if I can beat the crowd. Go getum next year.

Sounds like a awsome hunt. Hope you took a lot of pictures. Did you hunt the eastside of the mountains. Did you see many other hunters in the back country. I wish I had time to get out and hunt.

Does sound like you had a good time. I've been doing the same thing the last coupla' weeks. Elk are extremely vocal this year. I heard more bugling then I knew what to do with at times. Thanks for letting us know how you did....also lookin' forward to next year. :)

Craig,

I hunted the west side, however I was very close to the crest trail. I didn't see another hunter for the 9 days I was up there. I didn't get any pictures, only the pictures imprinted in my mind every time I didn't get the shot.

Well this was my first year of bow hunting and it was a good but not successful experience. I only could hunt the weekends but still got to hear a bunch of bugling my first day out (and first time bugling during this time of year) so that was real neat. I was hunting around the Satsop area. It was very thick and on certain days very wet. Congratulations to your friend for his success and to you on having a great time trying.

Anyone that would want to give their two cents, I'd be all ears. I think I probably didn't do the right tactics for this situation. When I heard the bulls bugling, first time from seemingly close (few hudred yards to 1/4 mile) I stayed pat and hoped they would come to me. Didn't happen and I waited to long before going after them and then it got dark too quick. Last couple times the elk seemed to far off (1/2 to 3/4 mile) to be real concerned about as it was already getting dark, but again maybe I should have just booked after them. Anyhow, trying to improve my tactics and I think I should have gone right after any and all of them as soon as I knew a direction they were. I did have a flashlight and headlamp with extra batteries, I just didn't put them to use. Anyhow this is a new style of hunting to me and just lokking for some tips if there's any to be had. This was very different than rifle hunting. Not used to not spooking them by being loud and moving fast.

Thanks for the story!

Mike

Sounds like an amazing trip.
Glad you found it a success even without tagging a bull.
Congrats to your bud on a nice one!
That rush of having so many bulls so close is great. Nothing like it. I also consider my trips a success if I get into animals, not necessarily tag. Thanks for sharing.

Bonefreak,

What about a story, pictures ???? we'd love to here about it. By the way it was the west side.

Sounds like a sweet hunt, almost enough to make me switch to archery, I got a bull a couple of years ago with that intent but with 9 points I just can't seem to do it until I draw my rifle tag.....maybe next year I'll just bite the bullet and switch, but then it interes with the high hunt, decisions, decisions.,...

Wow small world. Never thought I see you on here Jeff. That sure is a nice bull he got this year. He deserves it though as hard as he works for it. I don't know anyone that puts in more time than that guy does.

Curtis and I had some close calls this year but that darn wind kept boogering us up on the pass. We did see some nice bulls though. This was the first time we did the back country hunt. I will definetly do it again next year. Hopefully I don't have any darn weddings to attend right in the middle of elk season next year.
