I'm taking my son to Wyo for antelope this oct. This will be his 1st antelope hunt and our 1st time hunting Wyo. I understand from others that Wyo has some real strict and sometimes confusing property issues. We'll be hunting 023. Between Buffalo and Gillette there's a "walk-in-area" #7 just east of the powder river and south of I-90.
What should I know about these WIA's
Are they unlimited entry, if not, do I have get in line or draw a #, if I have to get in line, how soon before the hunt ?
Remember, this is my first WYO hunt and I know nothing about the cowboy state.

ps, this will most likely be our last big game hunt together for a few years. My son is 17 and when he turns 18 he plans on enlisting in the Army. Also, he has yet to bag a biggame animal and his sister has 2 deer under her belt ( sibling rivalry ) It's killing him !

Glass-eye,

The Walk-in areas are basically unlimited entry. In many of the big game walk-in areas, motorized travel is allowed as long is it is restricted to existing and/or designated roads (many of the bird-hunting walk-in areas in the eastern part of the state are walk-in only just as the name implies.) There is another private lands/public access program that is called HMA's or Hunter Management Areas where the WGFD manages the public access through permission slips available on a first-come/first served, or a lottery basis. Basically the landowners agree to allow public access if the Game and Fish manages that access (keeps the hunters out of the landowners hair.) Both programs are detailed on the WGFD web page and there is also a paper "atlas" available from the WGFD with maps and rules of each individual public access area.

You may also be able to find some additional access through other landowners in that area for no or minimal trespass fees. Good luck on your hunt!

Make sure you get a good county map of your area. The state has those areas to hunt besides the walk in areas, but they are sometimes confusing. Usually the unit is in between the signs but sometimes its hard to tell where they start and stop. Its not fenceline to fencline, it can't be that easy ha ha. Good luck. You should be able to find areas to hunt and tell your son thanks for standing up for our country.

You will not have to hard of time finding a place to hunt, antelope huntig is one of the best big game hunts you can do.Lots of game in some beautiful country!Good Luck and have a great time!
