I like both but learned an important lesson this year. I took a great mule deer during the archery season. Although the velvet was in good shape, I had it stripped so that it could be scored in the all time P&Y book, with plans to have the artificial velvet sprayed back on for the final mount. When I picked up antlers after the taxidermist had stripped them, I was astounded at how narly the anterlers were underneath the velvet. While I had noticed a number of prominent bumps and ridges for the first 6-8" from the bases, I had no idea how much character would be added to the mount by stipping away the velvet. At this stage, I'm simply going to have the antlers stained and mounted in hard horned configuration. To make the point that it was an archery kill, I'm having a picture mounted of the animal and will lay the retired arrow in the antlers. As neat a mount as the buck would have been in velvet, I will like it more hard horned! Kind of makes you wonder what was under all those other velvet racks doesn't it!
