Velvet or not?

Just out of curiosity. Who here likes velvet, and who here is like me and hates it?

I don't mind it at all. Kind of signifies the high country archery season to hardcore bowhunters like me. But I'm not too picky when I'm after a monstermuley, so I'll take them either way. :) Velvet mounts do look pretty good also. "Hate" them? Don't think I "hate" much of anything....excpet for errant shots! :)

Doesn't matter to me as long as it makes my adrenline flow. I do hate getting them when the velvet is just starting to come off. It takes a lot of rubbing to make them look natural.

I just want one big boy in the velvet, I like it on deer, not much on elk, looks good on moose.

I want a monster of each. There is something cool about a massive buck when he is in the velvet. Those heavy black hard horns are pretty cool too. I guess if you are like me you don't get picky! Have a great day!

I dont like it. I peel it off and stain em.

I think you should mount him just the way he walked through the woods the day you shot him! If its during archery season then the "velvet" should stay on! Just my 2cents!

I like the velvet a lot, I think it looks great. I also like hard horned antlers. I guess what I'm saying is that I just like antlers and I'll take what I can get. If I shoot it with a bow, I'm leaving the velvet on.

I am not saying that i will not shoot a deer in velvet i have killed two that way, but i really prefer hard horns.

The buck that I shot this year had thick beautiful velvet. However by the time we got it back to the truck, it was kind of beat up. So we are having the taxidermist do synthetic velvet on mine.

The buck that my wife shot was starting to shed some velvet and had very nicely formed tips so we are going to have hers mounted hard horned.

They should both be done in about a month so I will decide which one I like better at that time.

I love the sight of heavy velvet covered racks moving in and out of the oak brush.

To me I like how the animal came naturally . I hate when some one stains new horns darker . I like hard horns better . But if I got a velvet buck its staying in velvet .

COLO3D:

I had a mule deer buck mounted with the artificial velvet after the buthcer "forgot" to freeze the velvet antlers causing it to go bad. It actually came out nice. My taxidermists scared up the artifical velvet a bit to make it appear more natural and not "perfect". You should be happy with it.

I like both but learned an important lesson this year. I took a great mule deer during the archery season. Although the velvet was in good shape, I had it stripped so that it could be scored in the all time P&Y book, with plans to have the artificial velvet sprayed back on for the final mount. When I picked up antlers after the taxidermist had stripped them, I was astounded at how narly the anterlers were underneath the velvet. While I had noticed a number of prominent bumps and ridges for the first 6-8" from the bases, I had no idea how much character would be added to the mount by stipping away the velvet. At this stage, I'm simply going to have the antlers stained and mounted in hard horned configuration. To make the point that it was an archery kill, I'm having a picture mounted of the animal and will lay the retired arrow in the antlers. As neat a mount as the buck would have been in velvet, I will like it more hard horned! Kind of makes you wonder what was under all those other velvet racks doesn't it!

I like them both. I like them natural. If I get him early season, then the velvet stays. I have seen some beautiful velvet mounts. I was wondering why you hate it? Don't you like the looks of them in that high summer range?

I just do not like the way it looks, i enjoy the shinny sleek look of the hard horned, dont get me wrong i will not pass up a big buck because he is in velvet, i will take him and even mount him how he is, i would not strip the mount, i believe it should be mounted the way it was killed.

We just got this buck back from the Taxidemist the other day. I think it looks awsome in velvet. This buck would be in the top 5 ever taken in Utah with a bow, but it's not worth taking off the velvet. Score 199 5/8"

Arrowhntr - Why don't you submit to pope and young in the velvet catagory. That is an awesome looking buck. I to want a nice one mounted in Velvet. Congrats on a fine animal.

I agree, that bad boy needs to be measured for the velvet category. If you're ever down my way, I'll measure him for ya! :)

That is one awesome buck Arrowhntr, Big velvet bucks like that is what its all about... I would never strip the velvet off. When I see a big hard antlered buck, my first thought often seems to be, "man can you imagine him in the velvet" Even if I got one that would be a world record hard horned, I coudln't strip a good velvet buck.

I love the velvet.
