Utah Conservation Permits Out Of Control?

A few of my hunting friends and I have been discussing this list for the last couple of days so I came up with my idea of how I would run the program if I was to take over. Look at the list and then my ideas underneath and comment as you may. I have pretty thick skin so if you think I am the biggest idiot to roam the planet I am fine hearing that too. Thanks

Here is my plan, I am sure it has some flaws but here it goes.

Each unit gives one conservation permit (Example: Panguitch Lake Elk or Paunsagaunt Deer)

These tags are given to sportsmans groups such as SFW, MDF, RMEF, NWTF, Etc. these groups are now grouped together to have mini expo banquets per city, lots of guns, lots of fun. More people attend because it is one and done and the groups in the city participating split the funding or it goes into a habitat pool to be dispersed by the DWR.

Conservation permits are given to banquets according to location (Example: Beaver group gets Beaver elk, SW Desert Antelope, Etc, St. George group gets SW Desert Elk, Etc. You get the point.

My opinion is it is all about supply and demand, the tags are going for a lot less right now and everyone is blaming the economy, but is it just the economy or is it because the pool of conservation permits is flooded? When we get the tag numbers down the DWR gains more money per permit because the bidding wars go up. If the DWR loses a lot of money from this does anyone freak out if we pay let's say $5.00 more per year for a limited tag? I think this would more than make up for costs but the only question is where does this stop?

Ok, we have given one tag per unit out for conservation permits and these are the best of the best so that it becomes desirable to all the people bidding. Let's use the SW Desert as an example. We are down a SW Desert early rifle tag so now the expo comes into the picture. Each unit now gives another tag for the expo such as a SW Desert muzzleloader or archery it doesn't really matter. (It sure makes me feel better now that I know I have a chance at the tag because we all know that not many of us will win in the bidding wars and the expo tags are going to the general public). The expo still auctions a few tags that have not been discussed yet, Each unit that has a once in a lifetime hunt on it gives one tag (Example: Beaver Goat, Rattlesnake sheep)for auction and one per draw at the expo and I guess we could throw in a Henry Mountain rifle tag because hell, we all know that is a once in a lifetime shot anyway. Last but not least we still auction the statewide tag for each species, this keeps it equal with the general public, one auction and one sportsmans tag. The way I see it unless I am screwed up in my thinking each unit has now given up two tags. That is a lot of tags but here is the kicker that is good in my opinion. Half the tags go to the general public but all tags are still gaining money for conservation. Bear and Lion tags are included in all of this.

A lot of units such as the Dutton and Boulder are giving on average around five conservation tags per year (archery, Muzzleloader and rifle) so the remaining three tags (we are now only giving two per unit) that are now not given away are put back into the general Utah draw or just not hunted. (Less tags in my opinion needs to happen anyway). When the re-alignment to smaller general units happen(if it ever does) these tags would not increase.

Once in awhile we see a statewide tag from Colorado or Arizona so a rule is applied that whatever funds are raised by these tags goes to the state where the tag is held. If you buy a Utah tag the money stays in Utah.

Like I said there is a lot of flaws that you may find in this but it is kind of a happy medium and fair for everyone, yes I think it has gotten out of hand but yes the conservation program is important. The only way that we be really happy is to move to Alaska.

Oh crap, I forgot about landowner tags, what to do with these?
Let me know what you think!!!!

I have been putting in for elk on Monroe since I was 16 years old. I am now 33 years old with 3 kids. I have never hunted limited elk in Utah.

I wish they would save a few more tags for us guys with 16 points.

"One nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

why i have been putting in book cliffs roadless since iwas 16 i am now 43 i have grown kids never hunted l.e. elk took a freind last year in book cliffs it took him 33 years putting in was glad to get tag before he was too old to go in short utah draw odds are not are posted .dwr.little secrete.why!!!

wow a lot of thought went into that. First, in theory the conservation groups would want to work together, in the real world how would their leadership claim credit for projects then be able to market to their membership they are doing big things? Second, and you hit on it, landowner tags. Lastly, and I am not stupid, but why should RMEF, or SWF get a single tag? I know they auction it off for money etc, etc,. But I still don't understand how giving SWF 5 LE Manti Elk tags should help another unit. If the unit gives up the tag to auction, the unit should benefit for it, otherwise we sacrafice one unit or species for another and there is no net gain. Good work though.

You said it all Deerlove - that LONG list of conservation tags should disgust every single person that hunts in Utah. I am too tired of this discussion to type all the options, but there are multiple ways to make equal money for conservation without stealing that many friggin tags from the general public!! (the supply and demand point from the original post is a great one)

(note-I am not against conservation tags entirely, but the amount that Utah allows every year is out of control)

Absolutely! The list is long because the opportunity is there!
And before these groups came along we had 180,000 deer hunters fighting over who got to shoot the first spike buck they saw. And if you were real lucky you might draw one the 75 total elk tags that existed in this state. There were hardly any sheep, or goats or even turkeys for that matter. So yeah, lets take away those tags and conservation money and see where that takes us!

LittleBigHorn
It is true that the list is getting longer and longer every year. I do agree with you that the there is OPPORTUNITY. The OPPORTUNITY to make money is for sure there. I live in the Southern Region and the deer hunting was great 15 years ago and it is the same today. You are going to get what you hunt for.
There is no doubt that there are different ways to make money than to sell the tags. To be honest with you it is hard to track where the money from the tags go. I have very mixed feelings with this entire thing. No doubt the SFW,MDF,FNAWS,RME, groups do some great things for habitat and wildlife. My question is at what cost? These groups were doing great things 5 years ago and they did not have this many tags. So why are we giving up so many tags now?
Every year the groups report record tag sales. That is because every year we give them more tags to sell. Not hard to figure out.
I am not saying that these groups are bad. As a matter of fact my beef isn't with the groups as much as it is with the DWR for giving so many tags. In my opinion and it is just my opinion. I feel that we are out of control. I look at other states and they do not give out nearly as many tags as we do. They have just as big or bigger animals. Arizona and Colorado pop into my mind right away. So how do they have so many large animals if they are not giving up a bunch of tags every year? Sarcastically speaking maybe they just manage the resources to full potential?

It is kind of funny when you get the issue of huntin fool that list conservaiton permits. All states have a portion of one column and then Utah has two and half pages.

And is the hunting in Utah two and a half times better than ALL of the other states? It should be, right? If the money has done so much for the hunting in this state, why doesn't Utah have the best hunting for every species statewide? For all of the tags we give away, the hunting and opportunities should be a lot better than they are. Why do so many Utahns hunt deer in Colorado and Wyoming and how did the deer hunting get so good in those states without all of the convention tag money? Just wondering

I am always amazed at the residents of Utah who believe that the tag auctions have saved wildlife in Utah. If that was the case how did Colorado change their deer herds in 1999, wait, they didn't auction off half the tags, they cut the tags considerably. How does Nevada pull off game management every year without auctioning off tags. You can continue to say that it is a result of all of the tags being sold and the great work of all of the conservation groups. Conversation groups do work in other states and amazingly enough they don't need hundred of thousands of dollars of tags that should go to the hard working residents of Utah.

Rich

LAST EDITED ON Jan-28-10 AT 04:11AM (MST)[p]The whole state should be a fraking Habitat Golf Course lush by now with all those Con org tag$.

Every single state around us has Left Over tags and even unsold tags every year so the number of animals has increased in every single state not just Con Org Utah.

This is one of the biggest reasons my Utah Earned $$$$ doesn't stay in Utah.

It goes to Wyoming or Nv. or Az. or Idaho......hunting and so does my 'tourist dollars'....

I say----

1 Premium type tag for each unit/species for the Con Orgs to smooze and the very same--

1 Premium type tag for a seperate draw for ressy and non-ressy hunters to go for, no 10% or any of that crap --you enter ---you have a chance and it would be on-line application--Need Not Be Present or 'Validate'....

1 Gov tag for each species and the 1 Sportsman tag for each species.....

Put the rest of the 700 Con/Expo tags back in the res./non-ressy Public draw.

No more no less....

Robb

No question the deer numbers have not come back like we would have hoped, but I beg to differ that deer hunting in Utah is better than 20 years ago. And despite the perception, all mule deer populations in all western states are struggling.
We are also much more efficient at killing big bucks than we were 20 years ago. I shot my first deer with an open sighted 32 special at an amazing 200 yards. Now I can readily pop a milk jug at 700.(spotting scopes, range finders, scent blocking, scouting for weeks before the hunt.....none of the practices 20 years past!)
Maybe there are too many tags give out. But it can't be argued that they are not going to the pubic! I am a regular public guy, but I am willing to attend fund raising events that give these tags and I am willing to put up a very small amount of money for a chance at one. And if I don't draw, well I believe the money is going to at least try to make things better. I believe that just sitting on our hands isn't going to fix it either. IMHO

ASPEN

IF YOU HAVE BEEN APPLING SINCE YOU WERE 16 YOU SHOULD HAVE 17 POINTS TODAY EXCEPT YOU WOULD HAVE DRAWN ANY MONROE TAG LAST YEAR!!UNLESS YOU ARE NON-RES ? THEN YOU WILL DRAW THIS YEAR

WHY

ODDS ARE POSTED

LOOKING AT THEM RIGHT NOW
ONLY TOOK 14 POINTS TO BE GUARANTEED A RES TAG ON BOOKS RDLS HUNT LAST YEAR
ONLY TOOK 14 TO GET NON-RES TAGS TOO
FISH AND GAME MUST HAVE SCREWED-U ON POINTS

Ya, and "why" would have drawn a BC roadless twice by now if he had put in as long as he says.

Its always funny to hear the BS the clueless come up with.

And that's a crap load of tags...embarrassing actually.

PLEASE

I CAN'T UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU ARE SAYING

LEFTOVER TAGS IN EVERY STATE?
MUST BE PRETTY SH*TTY TAGS? PLEASE LIST LEFTOVER TAGS THAT ARE ANYWHERE NEAR AS GOOD AS THE WORST LE TAG IN UTAH AND I WILL GLADLY BUY YOU AND I ONE AND WE WILL HUNT TOGETHER !!

G3's tag list just looks long because it's double spaced....LOL ;-)

I have to agree, there are a lot of conservation tags. I think it does help wildlife, but how much, who really knows.? I would be surprised if we ever see them cut though.

Just one step closer to the feds stepping in and putting an end to the madness. Federal minimums for NR tag distributions. It's only a matter of time. It's federal land being prostituted.

PLEASE

THANKS,BUT WHATS MY JOB GOT TO DO WITH CONSERVATION TAGS?
ANY LUCK ON THOSE GREAT UNDERSUBSCRIBED TAGS?
ME I'M HOPING FOR AZ UNIT 10 RIFLE OR MAYBE NV 231.
NOT SURE I LIKE YOUR FIXATION ON BALLS THOU

#1 Best Option: Zero wealth tags.
#2 Best Option: Robb aka PleaseDear's plan or one similar to it. If there has to wealth tags sold reduce it to a couple of dozen...one per unit. Robb's plan would reduce the number of tags unavailable to most of us by 80-90% (from 400+ to around 40) but only cut revenue brought in by perhaps half because the value of each individual tag sold would increase a lot if there were significantly fewer available.
