Would any of you bowhunters like to see a Magazine dedicated strictly to the Utah bowhunter? Just trying to see If I can get enough interest and support to get one going. Any response would be appreciated.

I would have to see it first, but would more than likely sign up. I have some friends that I know that would probably as well.

I live in Arizona and travel up to Southern Utah once a year for the archery deer season. I would be interested as I love anything with western big game bowhunting.

I would like to see the mag. first, but I think you could count me in as well. I do know some other guys as will that would be pretty interested.

Thanks, it a great idea.

I would greatly appreciate it. Sick of reading articles on how to hunt white tails back east. I'd like to read about bow-hunting mullies in Utah for a change!

Thank's guys! With last years deer tags selling out and the amount of big bulls taken, I think Utah's archery hunting is at an all time high. What better time to have a publication dedicated to the Utah Bowhunter!

If it is not all advertisements, sign me up...
Can't get enough of good hunting stories!!
Especially here at home

Well let's see, limiting it to only Utah cuts out a TON of great western bow hunting stories. The very best Utah bow hunts are going to be submitted or recruited to the already established big name magazines, which means the trophy quality won't be absolute top notch. There won't be as many pages and there won't be as much reading/entertainment. With a specific market you won't get the same advertisement dollars, and thus to make the numbers work you'd probably have to charge upwards of 30$ a year for subscriptions to keep the business afloat. There?s no way that the first year or two out that it could match the caliber of the others competitors out there, and people will judge your mag based upon what they are already receiving. It's an uphill battle for sure?

Now would I pay $30 bucks for 6 issues of Utah Bowhunting?...If I think the product I'm getting is worth $30 buck than absolutely! But if its lack luster with sub par writing about less than entertaining hunts, with mediocre trophies, and cheesy editing, then NO WAY! I think its doable, but boy you better play your cards right and do it up good from the get go, cause on paper its got potential to sink.

Thanks for the input forkwest! First off, I would only start out at four issues per year. I guess for me I enjoy reading about locals who are in my state and maybe I have hunted the same area they have killed there trophy. Dont get me wrong, I enjoy the other magazines out there but who cares if someone pays 10,000 or more for there trophys. I want a magazine that the average guy can relate to. I know most people dont care to see average animals, but if you are creative enough in your magazine it could work. I know Utah is one of the leading states for P&Y entries so the interest for bowhunting in Utah is there. The chance of me producing a magazine my first year and being better than the other ones is not a fair statement. Everyone has to start somewhere and the first one always has improvements to make. For me, its bowhunting and I would like to see a publication for the state I live in.

Thanks again for the input!

I think it is a great idea!!! I know I am like a lot of other guys and I hate reading about whitetails. I think you are on to something. I wouldn't mind seeing what other people are harvesting in the state. Let me know when it gets out!!! I also sent you a pm

WFM,

I sold advertising for a magazine that was a start-up. We can talk more with a phone call. I played that game for 8 months. My boss still owes me $230O.

Here is what I faced and learned.

MONEY TALKS
MONEY pays the BILLS
MONEY puts gas in you CAR
MONEY doesn't come from HOBBIES
MONEY from manufactures has been set for a YEAR.
MONEY from manufactures don't like LITTLE NUMBERS.

ie;
DEMOGRAPHICS DICTATE!
USA= Several 100 million of people
Western US= several 10 million people
UTAH= several million people
Hunters= several 100 thousands of people
Bowhunters=several thousand
Those that sign up and support you....SEVERAL!
(Including me, BUT....)

Your target audience and captured audience is very different... and as others said... very limited.

If you are making a business decision... be very careful.
If you are making a hobby decision... GO FOR IT.

How can you achieve your quest?

How can you do it and accomplish the same goal?

WHAT ABOUT A HUNTING LOCALS ONLY.
WY Locals= several
CO locals= several
AZ locals= several
ID Locals= several
NV Locals= several
NM Locals= several
UT Locals= several
OR Locals= several
CA Locals= several
MT Locals= several
WA Locals=several
Total = 100's thousand

You need to get into the house and connect with every hunter. What is so different about UTAH, and the Front that isn't so appealing to the MT guy that hunts his backyard and the Colorado guy that has a honey-hole that carries years of tradition? Nothing... so why not connect them all. You could do that... But your not alone... Others are trying... But you can put your own flavor to it, you can put a twist on that.

Money will follow with numbers.

Keep pondering the concept your taking... What is different?
Where can I seperate myself?

IDEAS
WHY not combinte A MAG AND WEBSITE THAT DO THE SAME THING?
Why not two forms of media instead of one?
Can you hook up with one and push each others interest?

Take groups of people... Organize a group effort. As Money advertisers look at your business plan... they will see actual real numbers. Further the interest of others and push them too. Their is strength in numbers.

SOAP BOX or WHAT?

Hey... just giving you my opinion and your a good guy. I want to see you make it. I only hope this will help turn your wheels on your idea and it flys off the charts. Besides, you can count me in..."I'm an addictive bowhunting addict (ABA). "

Good Luck

Maybe you could tie it in with the Utah Bowmans Association...1000 members already.....

Maybe ocmbine it and have a decent quality mag. and be able to go a little higher in yearly fee...... which would include membership and subscription....???

Nothing is cheap to do any more and start up costs are very draining.... of a new bsns budget....

Hey WFM, Sounds like Midnight knows what you are up against.
Why not include the other states in their own sections, just to keep your subscriber interest up. Sure, there are magazines that do this now, but like someone said earlier, who cares about the guy who spends $10 grand for a tag and has a guide do the work for him. I want to hear hunting stories from everyday "joe's" who harvest deer or elk and do it on their own skill and determination. They don't all have to be record book animals to be interesting hunting stories. I love to tell my hunting stories and love to listen to others. I know it will be an uphill battle, but I'm hoping you can make it work. I'm sure there are a lot of hunters who would be glad to submit stories to the magazine. It's not just the trophy, it is the experience!! Good luck..

WOW, a lot of good info to digest. I live in Colorado and like a several thousand other Colorado hunters, would like to hear about Colorado public land hunts that the average person takes and works very hard for. Most of the other Magazines are filled with guided hunts on private land.
I've got a family, bills vacations and hunting plans each year, so I don't have that extra $$$ to spend on some exorbitantly priced week long hunt that is seen in almost every other archery and hunting magazine and TV show.
Be different. Focus on what the other magazines don't have and you will make a go of it.
The Western States Archer. Specific unit descriptions (what can be expected if you were to put boot to ground in that unit), game, terrain, strategies, equipment needed (much different than the yahoo's use who live and hunt to the East) and many, many other items to discuss.
If you do decide to make it a go, one thing you must always remember! your magazine HAS to have something that others want. If it doesn't then you (you're magazine) is no different from the other magazines, so why would they buy yours!

Good luck and god speed.
BTW, I'm interested in seeing the finished product.

I like the idea, but I think it would be pretty hard to compete with Eastman's, Hunting the West, Hunting Illustrated, etc. and other magazine's that cover western states already. If you limit it to just Utah, your client base is REALLY small in my opinion. Not the Utah doesn't have a ton of hunters, but the majority of hunters that want magazines, probably already get enough of them already. I'm also not sure you would get enough stories submitted to make it worth the effort for publication?

I guess the thought was good, but based on what Im hearing I would be wasting my time. Thanks for all the input!!

I think it would be very hard to make it.... Sorry.... BUT I think an on-line website might work.. charge a small yearly fee... offer some give aways... etc..
