Well Fellas its been an interesting month for me I was able to convince the wife to let me go elk hunting and I am glad I did!
September 1st I woke up late and was pondering whether or not I should even attempt to go up and hunt. I called up my neighbor to see if he wanted to go we left my house around 7 am and was hunting by 745 we decided to head up to my stands and not 10 minutes into the hike I decided to cow call just to get warmed up. Imagine my surprise when my cow call is answered by a cow elk. Instantly I thought it was another hunter so I call again this time the call was closer then I hear those fateful words from my neighbor " here she comes" now I cant see this elk to save my life so I crouch down and get ready then I see her she is on the same trail we are on. I estimated her at 30 yards and was coming to full draw then I noticed she had a stump covering her vitals. As i waited patiently at full draw I decided I wanted to let down just as I was starting to let down she started running down the trail straight at us my neighbor sat and watched in awe as this cow elk was about to run us over. As I tried finding my 20 yard pin in my peep to take a shot I noticed i couldnt see anything but brown I finally found the pin and released only to hear a loud smack. After the shot my neighbor and I sat there astonished from what had just happened then I seen my arrow and the bad thoughts start running thru my mind how could of i missed that shot. I walked up to get my arrow only to have the surprise of a lifetime waiting for me my arrow was covered in blood tip to tip. we waited a bit and tracked her down 35 yards away from where i shot. Now heres the kicker we measured the distance from us to where the elk was shot and it was 6 yards! I did my best george jefferson dance and thanked the elk gods for smiling on me that day. Not only did I have an experience that will never be forgotten but my neighbor will not be the same he is now addicted to elk hunting
