Unit 74

I decided to do my first non-guided public land western hunt. Figured antelope be a good start. So I drew a unit 74 WY antelope tag. Not looking to kill a giant but just a respectable animal and gain a wealth of knowledge and experience. Any advice, guidance, direction on Unit 74 and public land hunting would be greatly appreciated. I wont be able to be out for the opener but probably end of September or early October.

Thanks!! That is great news to hear. I was told by a friend that staying away opening week isn't a bad idea and that if I go out after the first week there will be a lot less hunting pressure. Does that sound right

Yes.....if you are unlucky you may see more than 2 other hunters. LOL. Good luck.

You should see more rut activity if you get out in early October. Just do some walking and get away from the roads. Antelope are great animals and fun to hunt. Find a high spot and glass up some good bucks then put a stock on them. IMO, this is much better than driving around. Good luck. Antelope is also very good table fare if you take care of it properly. Get the hide off as soon as you can. Keep the meat clean and cool. Best of luck. Shoot the one that makes you happy.

Thanks for all of the great advice. If anyone has hunted unit 74 before is there any particular part of the unit to focus on? The great thing about 74 is that there is so much public land but that also means lots of areas to choose from.

Thanks

Ii had this tag in 2015, it's a great unit just take your time and you will kill a really nice goat.

I've hunted out there every year for the past 8 years or so. I've taken several over 80 from the area, but the quality and numbers aren't what they were just 3 or 4 years ago. I've been out showing a friend around who drew a 90 deer tag this year. We're seeing plenty of goats, but nothing over 80 yet. Hunt anywhere in the south half of the area and you'll get a respectable goat...
