Hey spud heads, i'm an official Idahoan now and looking for places to hunt deer and elk. Just spent the weekend out west of Arco and Mackay.......it looked like heaven to me!!
Can anyone tell me what the scoop out there is quicker than i can decipher your crazy proclamation?
Thanks so much in advance!!

says you inbox is "inactive"....

last year was my first year hunting that country....my observation was decent bucks are pretty tough to find....i would surely get a wolf tag, saw three last year....killed a spike bull during archery season, and my dad killed a decent five point i have posted pics up here from 2011....i think the post has labeled 2011 oregon and idaho pics....unit 50 is general bucks archery and rifle, with a controlled hunt in november...general archery elk, and a controlled october bull hunt....

Hunted there in 2001 opening of rifle Deer season and none of us ever plan on going back, the good old days are gone to the wolves.

It's not as bad as everyone keeps leading on. Put on a few miles in there last season and found a few decent bucks. Get up high and do some glassing. Buddy killed one about 165 and another buddy killed one 175 within 24 hours. Beautiful country...

Used to live there. there are decent animals there but you have to hunt harder than you would in other units. the biggest problem i found there was the four wheelers... two tracks running everywhere and despite closures and atv regulations, you will hike you a** off and get into some good country only to hear a wheeler bombing up the trail behind you.

Stopped hunting there about 6 years ago. too many people and the quality of animals wasnt worth the effort. if you like the country, then that might be the deciding factor, for me though, the crowds from poky and IF ruined it for me.
Just my 2 cents.

I'm from Utah, i'm no stranger to big crowds and ATV idiots, but i know what you mean. Thanks for the info, it's much appreciated!!

LAST EDITED ON Apr-23-12 AT 02:22PM (MST)[p]Been hunting it for years born and raised there. I still go back but more for the sentimental value than anything else. It has been attacked by the "killer B 's" and the years of killing hundreds of does and cows in November and December have taken their toll. They started cutting back the tags a few years ago but it was a bit late. I will be back this fall but it isn't because of the quality of the hunting.

6speed, that's a shame......that is some of the best deer country i have ever seen, it should be crawling with nice bucks!
Unless i can find a better place, i'll be there just for the shear beauty of the landscape ;-)

LAST EDITED ON Apr-23-12 AT 04:34PM (MST)[p]Where did you move to?

Oh, I just saw another post. Idaho Falls? Sorry, don't know anything about that side of the state...

slamdunk,

You hunt hard, you'll find a nice buck. Look at your map, find some areas with no roads, and you'll find plenty of deer. Good Luck!!

Yes idabow, IF.....but i'm not apposed to to traveling if there's reason enough!

Thanks jetsled, it's pretty country in there, i'll spend some time in it this summer!

Well, if you get bored with that side, come on over to the west side. Its always fun to check out new places, but I personally can't think of anything right now worth that much in gas...

That ain't a camel toe, that's a moose knuckle!

slamdunk the scenery and memories keep me going back. Don't get me wrong there are still a few places the killer b's don't seem to get to much and there are still some good bucks running around if you can find them.

As it stands now Slam, you are a member of the dreaded killer B s or as one of my mormon friends call'em B'bast, I'll assume you all can figure that one out!! LMAO

Lol....i've been losing sleep wondering what "killer B's" are, and now i guess i'm one of them??
Heck, i'm a resident now, i don't want any Utards up here honing in on my new turf just cuz they are all tired of tag pimps in Utah! ;-)

I'm assuming that 6spd doesn't know that Butte County starts with "B" also? Not everyone from Bingham/Bonneville/Bannock deserves the harsh reputation most people spread on us, but think what you will. And yeah, if you leave the road, there are still some mighty nice bucs up there.

LAST EDITED ON Apr-24-12 AT 09:33PM (MST)[p]1B Bannock,4B Bingham,8B Bonneville, 1A whoops, the scurge of the earth, I suppose ya get my drift! Just don't have 8B on your bumper and you'll be fine! lol

lmao....guess i AM a killer B!!
Thanks guys, i'll definitely spend some summer time in there looking around :)

6speed knows very well that Butte County is one of the killer b 's. Blaine county is the one most common in the north but hasn't made this list yet.

With all the wildlife plates its more a figure of speech than anything else. In my youth I was far more territorial than I am now that I know how the bills get paid. slamdunk if you have any questions feel free to shoot me a pm.
