Unit 40????????

I've put in for this hunt since "92" with only skipping 2 years. No tag for my efforts. Thats about $2,000.00 in hunting license fees. Draw odds are going up slightly every year so my question is, have any of you drawn this hunt? Is it worth the wait. As a NR, the odds are even steeper than those stated cause this unit never gets 10% NR drawn, too popular.

My mule deer hunting is quality only, thats why I've been so persistant. Rather eat a tag than take one just to fill. 2 years I applied with my son and put in for better draw odds. We're putting in again and was wondering what people thought about #40.

Unit 40 is one of Idaho's premier muley units. If your draw the tag with a little work and a little luck, you could definitely knock down the buck of a lifetime.

support your local guzzlers. OHA life member, lapine oregon----- if you draw the tag contact me, i have 5 years of forked horn tag hunting, scouting info for unit 40. i tried for the tag 5 times, then hunted the general season in unit 40 each time. had the cow tag one year also

LAST EDITED ON May-15-07 AT 09:26PM (MST)[p]My friend drew this tag the first year he put in. I went along with him twice during the season to video. We saw one buck that easily went over 200". Unfortunately, there is a reason he got that big. He put the sneek on us through the junipers before my friend could get a shot. He ended up shooting a decent 5 X 5 on the last day of the hunt, it was only 24" wide. We saw plenty of nice bucks out there! I put in on this hunt last year and didn't draw. Hopefully this year will prove to be better. I figured out that the odds for residents is about 6%. So all I can do is cross my fingers. Good luck to you! Hopefully this year you will be out there in pursuit of an Idaho Monster Muley!

Wow you are buying the license every year just to apply for the controlled hunt! If I didn't hunt the general season in ID I would not apply. I hope you are applying in other states that reward you for applying and buying a license every year (AZ and NV) and in the other states with point systems (CO, UT, WY, etc.). I don't think the ID odds are worth applying if you aren't going to hunt the general season, but if you have the money go for it I guess. Good luck.

Apply for deer, elk and antelope so thats bout $50.00 per app. I do apply for all of the others you mentioned plus Oregon, New Mexico and Kali. I've hunted the general about 3-4 times during the last 15 years. Buy a archery elk tag if none of the draws come through.

Thanks for the input guys and good luck in the draw. Like I thought, great unit but its that way cuzz its so hard to draw.

I wouldnt say that a hunt in unit 40 would be worth the $2,000 you already have invested....sure there are big bucks in the unit....but just like most units they are few and far between...and it is a weather hunt...you dont get the weather you dont see as much (usually) you get a few earlier snow storms and it gets the does movin and the juices flowing.
Also this unit gets pounded pretty hard by the forky hunters....and they kill off alot of the younger age class bucks....as well as a bunch of 3 points and 4 points that are "mistaken" for forked horns and left to rot
Check the draw odds for some surrounding units and maybe they are better?

That $2,000.00 led to a controlled elk hunt and a antelope hunt so it wasn't for nothing. Love the late dates of some of Idaho's deer hunts and early dates of some elk hunts so they have me hooked. Not every state offers rut hunts with a rifle.

Youngbuck, the 2 years I didn't apply for 40, I applied for a nearby unit with the same season dates and twice as good draw odds. Your advice was good.
