Have a friend that drew 2015 Unit 40 antlered bull tag and thinking of making the trip over from Mt to take a peak at what he has going on. Just started a lil research, not sure if his tag was limited to 5 or 50? Starts the 15th of Oct. Not asking for a "tell us where there is a 370 bull".... just looking for a starting point. Do my homework? Yes, expecting that answer and I most certainly respect that. I hear it's a very hard tag to draw. Not afraid to put on a lot of foot miles or go home empty handed. Would just like to see a decent bull drop this year by someone who has allready put a lot of time in the field. Ethical, honorable and thankful for anything that comes around.....it is sure to go around. No trash talk please, kid got lucky, thats all. No help is fine too, I certainly respect that. A PM would be fine. Just got wind of this tonight, planning on being over there on the 13th. Decent and ethical folks more than welcome to accompany us. First time I have "asked" for help, if you do not want to offer it I understand 110%. Good luck to all of you guys/gals in ID this season, be safe and yes.....screw wolves, our Fish and Game Dept tends to be a bit of a sissy. Cheers.

I spent a bit of time scouting that unit when my son had a tag, the last year it was the Aug 30 opener for the early hunt. Great unit to glass bulls in Aug. Once they shed and go pre-rut, they move. There isn't a high density of elk in that unit and when they spread out after the rut, they are truely a needle in the haystack to find. If you look at success% for that tag you won't find a high number and I don't think that is because people are passing 6pt's looking for a monster. The good news is if you find a bull in that unit it is as likely to be a monster. We were out of that unit by late sept, so I can't really help, but I can say is they won't be up on the top like they are pre-rut. They will move from high to end up near late season wintering ground. I suggest your friend cover as many miles looking for elk sign as he can, and my suggestion is to focus on the ground between the tops and where they will winter. Call fish and game to get more info on where they winter.

I was just out there hunting the early hunt and never seen a bull over 330, I pasted on a ton of bull to try to find a monster and never even let a bullet fly and now I am on my way to 47 for the muzzy before the rut ends!

Well thank you all kindly. Was expecting to get chastized which is why I try to stay off forums in the 1st place. Definately open country, even more-so than Central Mt/Breaks. Hunted elk there since they firzt started giving tags but it is a bit busy with people for my anymore. Sounds like they do the same thing there after the rut....the big old guys that is, they vanish, go into seclusion if you will. In the Breaks they usually take off for rough steep country, not essentiall high spots or mountain ranges but just steep draws and cuts you have to be on top of them to see them unless you are lucky enough to see a big ol belly glowing in the sun a couple miles out just before they dissapear and bed for the day. Big guys there usually tend to be paired with a same age class bull or at least in a VERY small bach party.

You have a unit 47 ML bull tag? Ron

There is 5 tags for the early hunt wich is the in the rut and the there are 50 for the later hunt wich will have no rut, so it would be pretty har to find them.

I met a few of the other Super Tag hunter while I was hunting there, and two of them took small bulls and one of them shot a nice bull he said, I did not get a chance to see it because they where still packing it out at the time, I just never seen anything that big.

>I know of a 368" bull

There will be a number of other hunters with land owner tags in the late hunt also that know that country better than most. Again, the success in that unit is likely much lower than you might expect, but the quality of the bulls can be high.
