any thoughts on which unit to apply for next yr. we have 1 point each and are going as 3 brothers and a dad who just want to shoot some bucks and see lots of animals. I know all 3 units are going to have good odds for drawing with one point. none of us have killed a goat. which unit has the most public land and most roads for access. looking forward to a fun hunt as a family, thanks for your help.

32 and 47 have a little more public land but 48 would probably be doable. If you are willing to go with the special tag one preference point opens up a lot more options as far as units go. Since you have plenty of time if you've really narrowed it down to those 3 go on MYTOPO.com and order the unit maps. They'll cost you about $20 each but split 4 ways that shouldn't be too bad. Those maps will give you detailed answers to the questions you have. Good luck and MERRY CHRISTMAS. Chip

I have hunted 32 and 47 ,lots of public land with good access and good numbers of animals.Never hunted 48 though.

I agree with Rem308, I've hunted 47 before & there's a lot of public land & antelope.

I would hold out for another PP and hunt another unit not too far from these units that has much less hunting pressure if you are willing to pay for the special tag. I won't tell you the unit but you should be ablet to figure it out in about 10 minutes of research.

With 1pt i would apply in the special draw. There are only 5 or 6 units that you can't draw with 1pt in the special draw.

I always hunt the second week of the season and never see more than one or two other hunters.

Hunted 48 this year with my 13year old son for doe antelope. He did not draw a buck tag with 1 point and reg money. We had a great time shootin our does and saw lots of bucks to about 14". We hunted Oct 1st on a walk in area. Good thing as I didnt notice much public land. Would do it again! BH1

All of those units are fairly spotty public land. Of those, 47 has the most, but it is also harder to draw. I hunted 48 for does one year and ended up tagging someone elses doe. Yep, I was stalking a group of goats, when lo and behold, a dead doe on the ground. "Crap," I thought. I inspected her and she had been hit in the gut. She was still warm and rigormortis had not set in, meaning the kill was rather fresh. "Crap," I thought again. I let the goats I was stalking go, radioed my wife to bring the truck up the nearest road, got my knife and went to work. I called the warden and explained the situation and told him I would tag the doe. Next day while in pursuit of some other goats, I found an carcass, only the head and hind quarters missing. The dip chit who killed this buck didn't even take the backstraps.

HiMntnHuntr- That was the right thing to do in tagging that doe. I also have harvested a wounded animal that was not a "good" trophy but I think as sportsman we all need to do it when we know it is right. Too bad about the dipsh!t that shot the buck, took the head and hindquarters? What an idiot!

I've hunted 32 and seen a lot of goats. I've hunted 48 and seen a lot of goats. Call DGF and ask for names of ranchers that allow goat hunting. The ranchers will let you gain access for a small fee.

LAST EDITED ON Dec-28-09 AT 05:43PM (MST)[p]Often the type 2 licenses start later as well as only allowing hunting on specific parts of the area. Check the regs on the WY g&f website. I believe they used to have a 47 type 2 that only allowed hunting outside of the main shirley basin area, which is where most of the public land is.

Wizard, yeah I thought about leaving the doe there but I knew the meat was good and, after all, that is what I had gone for. We had 3 doe tags between my wife and I so I didn't mind tagging the doe. I could not believe the dufus that took only the head and hinds of that buck. Some of my most favorite meat is antelope backstrap. Unfortunately this guy was too ripe to save. Also unfortunate is a lot more guys get away with this stuff than get caught.

HiMtnHntr,

Thanks for doing the right thing by taking care of the doe that you found. It's unfortunate that the remains of the buck that you found were evidence of someone who didn't value the animal that they had chosen to kill. All we can do is police ourselves and help clean up the people who aren't responsible hunters.
