Type 1 or Type 2??

I'm thinking about applying for an NR pronghorn hunt in area 47. I noticed that there is a type 1 and type 2 hunt. I cannot find what the type 1 and 2 hunts mean anywhere! I found a general definition, but thats it. Is it differentiating between weapon choice, huntable portion of the area, sex of the animal? Can anyone point me in the right direction or enlighten me?

It is stated in the application booklet what each type for each area represents. In the case of area 47 type 1 is any antelope and the season opens Sept. 25. Type 2 is also any antelope and opens Oct. 5. I happen to be somewhat familiar with this area, though I have never hunted there. I would probably go for the earlier tag because that area gets lots of hunting pressure and by the time the second season rolls around many of the good bucks are gone. More importantly, the antelope are much more weary of humans by that time also. That area is very wide open and if they see your truck stop from 600 yds away they're likely to take off runnin!

I apply for the Type 2 license because the chance of drawing is a lot better and I always see a ton of antelope in mid October, took my biggest buck in the mid October hunt, besides it is a little cooler. The last time I hunted In Sept. ,I was
hunting in 80 degree weather,to hot for me to hunt.I usually hunt Unit 47 or 32.Hunting later in the season, the animals are calmer and I very seldom see another hunter.

Thanks for the info. I was looking into the Type two because of the odds and amount of public land. Does the weather start getting bad around October? I'm from southern NM where it was just in the 70s last week. What type of considerations should we make weather-wise?

One other question. How long do the hunts last? I can find the opening dates but not the closing dates. I'm trying to plan out which hunts I am going to apply for and don't want the dates to conflict.

First thing is you would need a copy of the Antelope Regs for that info now. I have my 2007 ones and here is the dates from last year.

47-1: Sept 25 to Oct 31st

47-2: Oct 5th to Oct 31st

Biggest concern with weather is accessibility if it rains. Bring 2 sets of chains or better yet a quad to get around in if it rains.

The trouble with hunting antelope later into October is that the rut is over and the critters are herding up. If foul weather hits, which often happens in Wyoming, then that'll herd em up even more. The later into October you hunt, the more challenging it'll be to stalk them due to all the eyes watching you. On top of that, it may well be muddy/snowing, etc...which makes for tough driving and tough stalking. It's harder to sit still laying on your belly when your cold and wet.
