Turkey Bodies

I will be hunting turkeys with my bow and will be using fixed blade broadheads. More than likely the Montecs that I currently have.

Where do you want to hit a turkey? I have heard, a saying: Hit them high watch 'em die, hit them low and watch them go.

Anybody else heard this or experienced this?

LAST EDITED ON Jan-25-08 AT 07:04AM (MST)[p]Of the archery birds I've seen hit, the most deadly have been the back shots.
Hit between the wings, paralyzing the bird.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-25-08 AT 09:59AM (MST)[p]There are several good shots on a turkey, the key is you need to break them down. They need to be hit right and the margin of error is small. I like a big mechanical. From the side, hit the wing butt or the top of the drumstick. From the front, hit the butt of the beard. From the back, non strut, hit them in the back between the wings. From the back, full strut, give'm the good old Texas heart shot right up the chute.

I WATCHED A VIDEO A FEW YEARS BACK AND I CANT REMEMBER THE NAME OF IT BUT THEY WERE SHOOTING TURKEYS IN THE HEAD WITH A BOW.THEY WERE SAYING THEY DO THAT BECAUSE THE HEAD IS AS BIG AS THE KILL ZONE IN THE BODY.I PERSONALLY HAVE SHOT 3 OF THEM THREW THE BODY AND BROKE THERE WINGS AND HAVE RECOVERED THEM.

Great question Chris. I also drew out and after talking with a few friends of mine they suggested the mechanicals too. Lots of shock potential with them. Do any of you know of a website or have pictures where they show you aim points for them? Good luck guy's!

I shot one with my bow last year in Kansas. The arrow went right through that bird and stuck in the ground on the other side. The dog gone thing flew off with his hens. My arrow was covered with fat and feathers but no blood and it really looked good when it hit. The friend I was with told me he always tries to shoot them right up the arse when they are in full strut. I didn't get another chance to try but I will sure try again this year.

Chad, where did you draw? Maybe we can call for one another. I drew first season Wasatch. Get back to me on that one.

It's always an adventure!!!

Shoot them right where there legs go into the body, turkeys cannot fly without there legs, and obvouisly can not run. I have shot quite a few with a bow and never lost one.

Arrowhntr,

Do you punch em high or mid ship up the legs?

What kind of broadheads does everyone use. My buddy recomended the Fuse, Strut Buster. Anyone shot this? Looks like a wicked broadhead.

I shoot them about two to three inches above where the leg dissapears into the body, that gives you the best chance of definatly hitting the body and killing the bird.

I have killed them with the old Gold tip gladiators & Wacem 100's, but this year i am going to shoot that new rage 3blade head its got to be the ultimate turkey head!

I am not a big fan of the gobbler Guillotine style heads they make to big a mess for pictures which is my favorite part of turkey hunting!

you hit em in the head or neck. last year i hit a turkey in the body and a few feathers came off and it ran away.
