Just bought a Nikon ED 50 that only weighs around 1.5 lb.s and need to find a tripod and head with a good balance of quality and value.Lightweight is priority for me as I am getting up in years now.Sure could use some advice if anyone was willing. Thanks IRHUNTR

I have the same scope. I have a velbon velux tripod which is good, but I found one I like better, and about the same cost.

Here's the tripod. Cost is $76.

here's the head I recommend. Cost is $59.

That's not too much money and it's a great rig. Highly recommended. I noticed that B&H is closed for passover so you might need to wait until April 7th or get it somewhere else.

Thanks for the suggestion on the slik setup, sounds like a sensible rig and very packable witch is just what I need. I have also been looking at the vortex high country but the head you mentioned may have the edge.Im gonna check em out, IRHUNT.

I went through this last year and ended up with a great lightweight setup that worked great. I got the slik 613 carbon legs and put a jim white head on it.I'm under 3 pounds total and with quality pieces that will last.

I recently bought a High Country tripod from Vortex and can say that I am pretty impressed. The price was right and it is pretty darn solid. It is also very light weight.

I have the High Country along with the 50 ED. Nice little set-up and I like the ball head. Is it perfect, probably not. But, for traveling light, it's a nice compact combination, and one that works well for me. Best of luck in your search.

I have the same scope..and those Slik items look great. All I have as of yet is the plastic Vanguard one and is shaky even when the wind is not blowing. The only thing I do like about it is the window mount that attaches on to the top of the head. What is the best window mount that goes with the afore mentioned set-up.

Thanks, Stuart
