This year I started hunting a new area. After hiking my but off and a few missed shot oppurtunities, due to the crunchy foilage beneath my feet, I am convinced this is tree stand country. I have also noticed a trend in more big Muleys being killed out of tree stands. What are your experiences with hunting mulies out of tree stands.

Back in the day, my father in law used to do all his hunting from tree stands. He always got a deer and many were really nice. Most people don't have the patience for them but I think if they are set up in a good spot, they can produce.

I hunted my treestand last weekend and saw about 25 deer. The bad thing was I didn't do quite enough research and I ended up setting up in an area with mostly Does and yearlings. The only way in my opinion to do it is to hunt over a good mineral lick or water source. Believe it or not sometimes the mineral lick is better, if it rains they can drink anywhere and will, they'll always hit a mineral lick. I used Deer Co. Cain. It is phenominal stuff. I set it up in June and they've been hammering since then. Like I said though, I'm seeing only does and fawns. I set a trail cam on it for 2 weeks, I got 87 hits on my trail cam, 24 pics were taken, all Does and slow elk (cows) except for 1 little unicorn buck. If you find a good spot with a local bachelor herd, you should do very well. I had does within 5 yards of my stand. The same should apply for the rut, but then you want to be in an area with a high concentration of does. I'll hunt this stand in Jan. during the rut and I should do well. We'll see though. Muleys have such great hearing that it will requir you to be able to draw your bow veerrry slowly. I practice a little with some of the does that came in and they picked me up almost every time I drew except when I did it very slowly. I took my poundage all the way down to 60lbs just so I could take a long time to draw, and I mean a long time. Even with rest silencers they picked me up. Its quite a thrill to be in such close quarters with that many deer, it was a great learning expirience.

Give it a try... you will not regret it!!

Good luck
Donnie
