Transferring deer tag

Hi, my buddy from PA drew the November rifle deer hunt in 34. He just told me today that he got orders for Iraq and leaves in September. I looked in the regs, but couldn't find where it says about transferring tags. I know I have read it before though. He said his brother (also from PA) would be interested in the tag if possible. Thanks in advance.

LAST EDITED ON Jul-13-08 AT 10:13PM (MST)[p]You may be able to get away with it. I had a friend that had a heart attack one year and we were able to transfer his elk tag. Call G&F and give it a shot. I am pretty sure it is only medical transfers but they may add to it for a military issue.

A friend of mine (military) was to gaining member of a miltary transfer of a NM deer tag two years ago. I'll check with him and see how it was done.

You can get the license trasfered. I know a guy who was in the same situation. Call the G&F office and they will tell you what you need to do in order to get it done.

Thanks for all the help. I'll give you a call around noon tommorow Dan. By the way, how was your trip up the mountain?

PA,
I transferred all 3 of my tags last year due to a deployment to Afghanistan. It's pretty easy, but you need to make sure you submit the proper documentation. Here's what you need to submit:
"You may transfer with a letter explaining your situation, a copy of your orders, and all the info for the person you want to transfer to (name, address, DOB, phone #, SSN, proof of service, hunter educ, etc). We will also need the original permit returned."

You can contact Rhonda Holderman at 505-476-8093 or her e-mail is [email protected].
Give me a call if you have any questions.

I think your friend would also have the option of taking a raincheck of sorts and hunting next year or something- I know the NMDGF has done that for folks in certain (very) special situations. Military serviceman get a lot of slack when it comes to hunting laws in NM (and deserve every bit of it!!!!)

LAST EDITED ON Jul-16-08 AT 07:32AM (MST)[p]I asked that question last year & was told I would have to go through the draw process again next year, but could transfer the tags I drew to anyone eligible.-KH

KHart's probably right, but it seems like the whole thing is pretty subjective.

A couple years ago, a big outfitter's wife drew a bighorn sheep tag but was going to be 8 1/2 months pregnant for the hunt so they (NMDGF) let her pospone for 1 year.

I do know this much- If they tell you something you don't want to hear-- Keep whining and it's likley to change- hate to put it that way, but it's true.

Even the prospect of transferring the tag is pretty new in NM, a decade ago they'd have told you tough titty (and meant it).
