toughest expandable out there

If you really wanted to shoot expandables, which one is the toughest? Of course nobody aims for bone but which model would you have the most confidence in its ability to break a shoulder?

Tough and expandable don't belong in the same sentence as far as I'm concerned. Of course, this is only MHO but I feel that there are too many great flying fixed blade options (Muzzy 100 4-blade, Nitrons, RM Ironhead, slick tricks etc.) to risk shooting mechanicals. But again before I get flamed off the page, that is just my humble opinion!

I wouldn't risk and expandable. Thats my opinion. And what for? Fixed blades fly true and if your bow is tuned correctly they are not a problem.

But a big FYI. If you are going to use them do NOT use wasp brand. I shot 4 animals with jackhammers and my wife shot 1. Her shot opened up the way it was supposed to on a WT buck about 125 pounds and her bow is 56 pounds DW. I then thought OK I'll try them for a huge hole. First one I took a quartering shot, got one blade open and not penetration other than a long cut along one side. Shot a doe next and hit her in the spine as she ducked. Blades broke off and only enough penetration. Shot a gray fox and they opened and almost literally cut him in half. I was impressed. Last one was a 145 pound cull 6 point WT. Shot broadside through both lungs and head did not open at all. Was still closed when I found it on the ground. Took me all day to find that buck when I fixed blade would have had him on the ground in seconds and less than 100 yards with the same hit.

I'd shudder to use them on large game.

In all fairness I've seen shoulders broken on wild hogs with Puckets heads and thats about it.

2 cents worth for whatever its value.

Due to de-acceleration of the arrow once the head penetrates the other side, it will cause alot of mechanicals blades to close up. There is still alot of friction of the arrow and vanes slowing the arrow even after the head has come out the other side, blade inertia can swing them closed.

On the animal you recovered what did the inside of the ribcage look like? Its easy to see if a head expanded or not as it exits the meat / bone on the exit side of the animals ribcage.

Long ago I used to be sold on fixed blades but got talked into trying mechanicals this year ... and after my own results, I am pretty happy with them.

I along with my hunting buddies have had great success with Rocket Steelheads. I have seen this head perform time and time agian and would recommend it to anyone. Shot placement is the key in my opinion.

I killed an elk at 40 yards last week with a Steel Head expandalbe .. complete pass through ... elk went 60 yards and dropped... its all in placment.

I have shot a lot of broadheads. I have shot the Grim Reapers, Lots of Rocky Mountain heads, Muzzys, Interlock and the Vortec. This year I decided to switch from the muzzys that I have shot for years and switch to Wac'em heads. They shoot every bit as good as any mechanical I have ever shot, and they are a cut on contact for superior penetration. I will not shoot another unless they go out of business, but as good as they fly I dont think that will happen any time soon.

Hi Dallan

Most folks always question results. So what I post below is not bragging. Please don't take it as that. I've shot over 100 animals with my bows. I've shot fixed blade with super success. I've used replaceable blades, also with good luck if you choose a good brand.

I let my wife shoot expandables one year to see about bigger holes and better blood trails than her 2 blade Zwickeys were giving her. After the one buck and a few wild pigs I was thinking I'm sold on them.

Mind you I was a taxidermist full time for a number of years and a hunting guide for about 5 years(family got in the way but is well worth it). So I've seen lots of results, lots of animals cleaned. I always check out wound channels to see. After seeing the results of shooting about 300+ deer for 5 years straight I've formed some really solid opinions on rifle calibers and bullet selection. Same goes when it gets to archery.

Bottom line is you are correct on autopsy results. The last deer I shot with an expandable(mind you my only experience was with Wasp) was finding the arrow with broadhead intact and the retainer band for the blades still set where it was when I shot. Not opened and closed again etc.... And the deer proved that. The hole looked about like a Judo head went through the lungs. Not an open broadhead.

Again, mind you I stopped using them after that so I can't commment further other than a buddys years of success with Puckets. My thoughts are that fixed blades take a bit of work but I've run them through 300 pound hog skulls, through both shields of a 450 pound boar, through shoulders, spines, and all kinds of structure and they have always performed well. So I'm kinda stuck there with whats proven. Especially since its nice to say put it in the right spot, but it doesn't always work so I go with whats been proven to me over the years.

So while you may have found a super open on impact head, I just can't go there in my own mind. And since family time is important I just don't have the time and funds to keep buying and testing. I'm afraid I'll be testing a new head when the buck of a lifetime walks out. To this date the biggest deer I've managed (not in a quality area) have been taken with Snuffers and Muzzy 3 blade. Both hold together extremely well in my experience.

Again, I hope no one takes my fair successess as bragging. I just want ya to be aware I've got a bit of experience under my belt when I type. When I don't know, I ask all I can(go look back at the MZ threads- new to the new guns and needed and still need lots of help there)

Respectfully, Jeff

Good post! Especially when you mention Zwickeys. I still use them when I hunt elk. :)

I have a good suspicion that when my brackenbury recurve and I head to Alaska hoping for a moose it will be with 2 blade Zwickeys. I hunted Caribou with 3 blade snuffers but Moose are a whole nuther animal!

Its funny that I started with them and its not unusual to go back to them often at times. Especially those requiring penetration and solid construction.

Jeff:

Nice choice for a traditional bow too. I have two Bracks, one made by the late Jim himself, and then a Legend after he passed on. Beautiful bows that shoot like a dream.

Good luck and be safe on your Alaskan adventure. Post up a story or photos when you get back!

i definetly have disagree with the expandables. i know a guy here that is 4 for 4 on big animals with expandables then i know some people that hate them. i for one was having trouble early in the year with fixed blades so i tried an expandable. fly awesome but no penetration. shot a bull at 20 yards perfectly broadside. it was probably my best placed shot to date. guess what, all that went into the bull was the broadhead and stopped. I WILL NEVER USE THEM AGAIN. COST ME A 280" 6 POINT.
