I was working today and had jumped some elk so I thought I would play around and follow them for a bit. Well, their trail led me to this! This is the first elk shed that I've found in timber and not along the side of the road like my previous finds. I was totally excited I found one finally.
From the looks of it, I'm guessing it's last year's because the base is all brown and there is some moss growing on the horn, but it's in immaculate condition, suggesting it's this year's drop. Also, the base has been bleeding since I picked it up at 11:00 AM this morning. I'm not really sure what that's all about but I read on a forum about blood pockets that get stuck in the antler when the elk/deer drop them. So I'm assuming that is what it is. The last picture shows it lying next to a big 8-pointer that I have, just to give a size comparision.
Oh yeah, the horn is dark, really good looking color
Enjoy the pictures, I'm enjoying the shed!

P.S. This is a roosevelt, just incase someone was wondering.
