Fred Phelps is a moderate! Can't believe it took me this long to realize that. There is no other reason or justification for him being so screwed up and rudderless. He has political views from both sides, he's veeeeeeery outspoken and contraryyyyyy and he can't be reasoned with. I've know others who have the same affliction.
Does my theory stand up?

Well as a peace offering I give you some advice on things not to say to the Mrs friends while sunbathing. Tan lines look terrible or vitamin D should be equally distributed. Can get a guy in the dog house, even one known already as a big mouth.
