I dont know who all watched the fight last night but I though I'd do a post on it anyways. Swick looked pretty good, didnt do anything impressive but did defend the take down very well. I was a little disappointed when it went to decission but like everyone else Im sure I like to see the big knock out or stoppage or even the world renown "Swickitein". Nonetheless Swick went on to win. I like Swick to I was happy when he got his hand raised but I just wanted to see what everyone else though of Mike in his new weight class. I missed the Corey Hill fight, anyone fill me in?

Josh Burkman is a handful. Its hard for anyone to look great against him.
Hill won by ref stoppage in the second. I was channel surfing alot but I don't think they aired this fight (but I could be wrong).

LAST EDITED ON Jan-24-08 AT 04:22PM (MST)[p]I couldn't sleep last night so while I was waiting on the world market reports I tuned into UFC/Rambovision.

Swick is a local guy, so it was Ca v Utah last night. That was a very close fight with both guys doing a great defensive job. Man, when Burkman jumped up with a spinning round-house kick I thought the fight was really going to heat up.

Somebody had to win, but I thought that it was a draw. I thought the fight before that was pretty interesting when Blondie got his teeth kicked thru his lip in the first 5 seconds, then went on to win.

The Hill fight was not aired.

I disagree as far as how Swick looked. He looked weak and skinny to me. I think he needs to go back up to where he was.

Pelegrino looked like he was done in the first 5 seconds! Took a shin to the chin and put a hole in his chin about the size of a nickle.

I was really disappointed with McFedries outing. This guy is usually a brawler and can really take a punch. Not the case last night. He'll be back.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-24-08 AT 05:53PM (MST)[p]If there was ever a fight that should have been a draw, it was that one. Swick will be fine at WW once he gets the weight cutting thing down. It wasn't one of the better UFN but for free you can't complain to much.

I was dissapointed that McFedries didn't KO Cote. I'd love to see Cote get a chance at Silva, Henderson, Franklin or Okami and get wrecked.

Off to Judo class to get wrecked myself..........

LAST EDITED ON Jan-24-08 AT 06:02PM (MST)[p]Silva would destroy Cote just as he did Franklin....twice!! I'd like to see a third Silva vs. Franklin. I would hope that by the third fight Franklin would be able to defend against the Muay Tai clinch. Maybe it takes 3 fights!

Wanna place a bet Anderson walks away with the belt come March AZ?

I fell asleep in the middle of the Swick/Burkman match.

Here is what Swick had to say about the fight.

"From: Mike Swick
Date: 01/24/08 01:19 PM

Hey Guys,
First I want to apologize for the lackluster fight last night. I do take my fans very seriously and it obviously hurts to let them down. I am not the most experienced fighter out there yet and last night was a tough lesson I had to learn. There was a lot of pressure coming off a dissapointing loss, cutting for the first time, and hosting a Main Event. I did gain a wealth of knowledge through this experience that will help me in my next outing.

Though everyone here is saying how skinny I looked and this and that, I was 2 pounds lighter than when I fought Okami. The difference is that I bulked up after the Okami fight and then over cut myself the 2 months leading to this fight. Next time I will come in bigger and cut more at weighins.

Burkman is strong and I wanted to prove that I could resist his takedowns and strength. I wanted to stuff his takedowns while gassing him then pick him apart on the feet. By the time the 3rd round came I let it get so close that just one takedown could have seen me going home with a loss and so I was more tentitive than I should have been. I tried to look for the one punch knockout over using my usual combinations and flurries and deeply regret it now.

Though I looked frail as some put it, I felt really strong at 170. My mistakes were mental. Believe it or not this whole experience made me a lot more confident about 170, my strength at 170, and dealing with what I had to go through leading up to this fight. You will see a much more confident me in my next fight and I hope to get back on track and put on the exciting fights I started my career with.

I appreciate all the support and criticism.

Thanks,

-Mike Swick"

Definitely should have been a draw. The UFC should have yellow cards and use them when the fighters are not fighting. Yes, he was defending the takedown but time and time again he did nothing in the clinch. In Burkman's interview he said he was doing all that crazy stuff just to get Swick to fight. Thiago Alves was VERY disappointing against an opponent that got owned in his last fight. I enjoy any fight that the Diaz brothers are in. Entertaining fighters and interviews after...those guys don't back down from anyone. haha

Nate and Nick Diaz are very good fighters...that is for sure. Nate, still on his way up, should not talk as much smack as he does. I think his mouth may write a check that his skills can't cash! We don't know that yet cuz he hasn't fought anybody worth mentioning.

Nick Diaz, on the other hand, talks a lot of smack and can back it up. I think he'll be here for a long time.

What do you want to bet? Anderson Silva is an animal and will not be beaten for a long time!

Timberline

I agree that he is an animal, and I don't dislike him. but he hasn't defended his title against someone in hendersons class. definatly no as heavy handed. It very well could go the other way but I think henderson will beet him.

I seen Henderson fight Rapage and I did not see one bit of anything that impressed me. Dont get me wrong Henderson did some HUGE damage to alot of people in Pride, but UFC isnt pride. Henderson cannot deal with Silva's length or BJJ. The only thing Henderson has over Silva is he is very heavy handed. That has worked for people in the past (Chuck) but it could go the same way if he got hit with a knee or a kick from Silva. Even Silva's upkicks are very very dangersous, and this could play a huge roll if it went to the ground. Silva is one of the best in the business with submission and using what he does best. I also think that Henderson could not defend against Silva Thai Clinch, All around Silva is a much better fighter, by a landslide. As stated before Henderson is very heavy handed but I am more than confident Silva will win. Silva in the 3rd. Anyone that bets against him, thats your choice, but he isnt the Champ for makin mistakes, or losing.

Timberline

I'm torn on the Hendo/Silva fight. Silva is on a nice streak. Hendo is a stud. Silva has great hands and is a killer in the clinch. The one knock that I "saw"(I am no expert, just a big fan of MMA), was the Lutter fight. Silva did not look good on the ground with Lutter. I know that Lutter is a wizard on the ground but Silva was in trouble in that fight. I think Hendo has the strength and the wrestling to take Silva down and could win the fight on the mat. This should be a great fight.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-26-08 AT 11:12AM (MST)[p]I think Anderson Silva is a stud. I think/hope Hendo beats him. I think it speaks volumes for Hendo that he fought so well agains Rampage. He moved up a weight class and went 5 rounds with the world champion and at the beginning of the fight he did very well.
I saw the same thing Cabo did. I think Silva was in trouble against Lutter. I think had Lutter made weight mentally he would have been sharper and would have performed even better.
Either way, I can't wait for that fight!
ps.
If anyone missed the fight night on Spike the other night I believe it repeats tonight.

I can assure you that Dan is training hard and doing all of the right things in preperation for this fight. Dan has brought in Cyril Diabate to train with him. Diabate is a Muy Thai specialist and is taller, longer and stronger than Anderson Silva.

dsc01699jf7.jpg

You can see the size difference in that pic. Diabate gave Shogun all sorts of trouble in Pride before getting stomped in the face.

The difference is that Dan can find a guy similar to Anderson to train with but Anderson wont find anybody thats similar to Dan. If you know where you can find one of the greatest Greco-Roman wrestlers in the world that has a granite chin and a devastating right hand you might want to send Andersons camp an email.

Look Diabate up on You Tube and you'll know that Dan has the right training partner

"I think had Lutter made weight mentally he would have been sharper and would have performed even better."

Woulda, shoulda, coulda!!

Steve

If Cyrial Diabate is this all godly Thai fighter maybe he should step into the UFC. Then he could really test his skills! Win or lose its gonna be one hell of a fight. Only time will tell.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-26-08 AT 04:14PM (MST)[p]Hendo bringing in the "Snake" to train for this bout was a great idea. Drum, if I'm not mistaken he brought in Xavier Foupa-Pokam (Professor-X) as well. I can't wait for this fight.

As a matter of fact, the whole card for UFC 82 looks awesome!!

www.mcclendon-elk-hunts.com

Hendo is a great fighter. Probably one of the best in all of MMA, but Silva is also a VERY dangerous striker. In 4 of his last 5 fights, 4 have come by knockout. His striking it seems sometimes is not credited as much as it should be, because he is so well rounded. Travis Lutter is a great wrestler and Silva submitted him. Personally I would like to see Silva land an up kick or a flying knee to Henderson's head and we'll see how he holds up. Its gonna be a great fight. I like both fighters but Spider is by far my favorite fighter, as well as Roger Huerta. Ill be cheering for Silva.

Timberline

I hate Penn. One of my favorite fights was watchin Matt Hughes hammer fist the crap outta him. And I dont like Matt Hughes!

Timberline

Great comments by everyone. It's fun to watch this sport grow.

I agree that it will be hard to find a wrestler like Dan to bring into Silva's camp but it seems to me that Dan does not fight like he is a wrestler which would be to his advantage. Out of 28 pro fights he has only won two by submission. 9 are KO's or TKO's. All of his losses are decision losses except two that he submitted to Noguiera. I DO believe he can beat Anderson, but my point is that Dan seems willing to exchange with anyone which might be a problem against Silva. Use your wrestling and take him down and win on the mat.

Being a Utah bred feller, I would have liked to hear Burkman would have cleaned up the cage. I'll wait to see a repeat I guess, missed it somehow.
Anderson Silva is a COMPLETE fighter, he will be tough to beat for some time I would think. Huerta,... love him. Whatever happened to Stephen Bonnar? Haven't seen him in the spotlight for a bit, I think he's very complete as well.

Penn wont smash Huerta. He might beat him cuz he is a better fighter but we wont completely devastate him. Huerta is a great fighter, give credit where credit is due.

Timberline

BJ Penn is one of the most, if not the most gifted fighter in MMA.

I thought the Huerta/Guida fight was one of the best fights I have seen in a while. Huerta is very skilled and confident.

BJ Penn would have his way with Huerta. No contest....

Point well taken, I think that Dan wants to stand and throw. He is a brawler and can knock anybody in any weight class out.

That being said, I dont believe Anderson Silva has the power that Wanderlei or Rampage has. Dan took their best shots and kept moving forward.

Dan is not a Rich Franklin or Travis Lutter, you take the best of what those 2 guys have to offer and Dan is better! He has one of the best chins in MMA history, he has fought some of the toughest guys in multiple weight classes in the world and has yet to be knocked out. Thats not to say it wont happen, but given his history you cant expect Anderson to do it in this fight.

I am VERY confident that Dan will win this fight which is why I am flying to Columbus Ohio at the end of February. I am looking forward to seeing the fight and seeing Dans hand being raised at the end ot the fight.

Drum

You guys are both outta your mind. Yes Penn is very gifted and one of the best in UFC, no arguement there. But he would not just totally dominate him. Huerta is one tuff dude and can take a hit. If BJ beat him it'd be by submission. But he would not just knock him around the ring. Huerta stand up is good.

Timberline

Huerta has a similar style to GSP and has great cardio. BJ Penn is a freak and looked invincible against Joe daddy. I think Huerta/Penn would be a very good fight. Would either end by a Penn submission or Huerta decision.
