stolen elk sheds

my buddy found this killer set from a 330-340 bull in northeast oregon 2 weeks ago. he was pretty excited- WAS...
he found the set early in the day . he was going to make another hike to find more sheds and was going to pack them with him. he and the guy he went with decided instead he should just stash the horns and pick them up before he left. he put them in a crazy, nasty thicket with his coat wrapped around the horns. he was gone all of 1 1/2 hrs and found his sheds gone! the sitka jacket he had wrapped around them was still there.
yes , he'll probably never "stash" antlers again. but somebody new they were found and took them.
it's a long shot but if anyone happens to hear or see a set like these, please shoot me a P.M.
he has basic 6x6 frame but a "little bump" on his right side that is in place of g-6
and on his left , the antler is swollen where a g-6 would be.
thanks- KB

Sorry to hear about the set. It is amazing how many people are out there...
This spring, I found 2 great blacktail sets right by each other. knowing my buddy was going to walk up through this beautiful opening an minute I placed the largest set in the opening as if the buck just dropped them, after taking plenty of pictures as evidence that they are mine :)

We were nearly two miles from a road and no sign of recent human activity. I took a twenty minute hike to come back to that opening to see some stranger walking out of the meadow.
I ran up to the stranger wondering how I was going to explain to him the joke I was playing on my buddy and that those antlers are mine. He told me there were no antlers in the meadow when he walked by but he had another friend in there as well that may have picked them up. I panicked looking for my buddy. I finally found him packing the big set in his hands. I was much more relieved to see him than he was to see me after I explained the story.I was amazed to see shed hunter in the area.

Antler planting in front of buddies is still one of my favorite pasttimes...I just gotta be careful where I do it.

Sorry for your friends loss. they look like real good sheds.
how well does he know this "buddy?
if they two were the only ones up there
he may want to look into the possibility that the other guy may have made a call.
were they together the whole time?
I would look into it if I were him.

LAST EDITED ON May-28-09 AT 02:50PM (MST)[p]That really sucks. But that's why i never stash antlers. If i want them bad enough I'll carry them out no matter what. There is always that risk when you leave it behind.

The guy he went with stole them. Doubled back after they started hiking again and stashed them somewhere else. He has probably already sold them.

I had a friend spot a set I was walking towards from the other side of a canyon, he "called" them before I did, but didn't hike over. I picked them up and packed them around all day and took them home. The next day while I was at school he came over to the house and told my wife that he was there to pick up some sheds of his that I had. She was clueless so she gave them to him and that was it. I have other stories about this same friend. Bottom line, you just can't trust a "hard core" shed head when it comes to antlers.

see when you are out in the woods you never know who's watching

toro: i gotta ask, are you from prineville?
i know a guy with the same name

Ya seems like a case of "wish ya wouldn't have". That sucks bad that he lost them but what can you expect, people are dishonest. That is why if you want to keep a set of antlers you never leave them behind. I know a guy who had a pack horse loaded with antlers. The horse got tired so he unloaded the horse wrapped the antlers with a blanket and the pack saddle. Went got a different horse an hour later they were all gone. That was even before shed hunting got hot. Anyhow, moral of the story never leave a bone behind.
