LAST EDITED ON Apr-13-06 AT 10:32AM (MST)[p]Finally got out for a few more days and managed to pick up some more elk bones. Actually, my dog is responsible for finding the ones in the timber...I would have completely missed them if it weren't for him! He smelled them on the wind and honed in on 'em. What an asset! He also found his first brown moose paddle the other day and brought it right to me! Yeeehaw!

Glad to see many of you are still picking up some great bones and posting them for all of us! Good luck out there!

I have been trying to teach my golden doodle how to find horns but he just doesn't understand the whole concept. How did you teach your black lab to horn hunt?

Sweet Greg! Those are some nice looking sheds. That 7pt is a neat one and the moose is awesome! I actually found my first moose paddle ever last weekend too! I guess you could say I was a little excited... My buddy, Non-Typical here on MM said in all the years we've been shed hunting together he's never heard me hoop and holler like that when I found a shed. I had no idea we'd find moose in the area we were hunting and when i found it I let out a beller! Luckily it was just a medium sized paddle or I might have lost my voice! :)

Looks like Buck is still kickin' butt and takin' names! That's awesome!

Thanks for sharing the pictures.

Good luck and keep em' coming,

LAST EDITED ON Apr-13-06 AT 03:12PM (MST)[p]Hey BB,

What the heck is a golden doodle? Is it like one of those labradoodles, but a golden retriever mix? Hmmmm...

I worked with my dog a little: I'd hide antlers and have him find 'em...I'd sometimes throw them and have him retrieve them...I'd play various games with him and involve fresh sheds as the scent. However, I would never let him keep them. I would put 'em away while he still wanted them, that way he would lust for 'em! But more than anything, he has the drive & desire to please, so when he knows what I'm lookin' for he looks for the same thing...whether it's birds or bones!

Of course I get a LOT of jaw, leg, rib, etc. bones and pine cones (pitch scent like fresh antlers) throughout a day of shed hunting, but I reward him by letting him carry them around for awhile or by throwing them out so he can retrieve them a couple times before I hang them out of his reach on a tree or something. I do the same thing when he finds antlers (unless they're big elk antlers!) then I strap 'em to my pack so he'll leave me alone and go out and hunt more! I've watched him drop a fresh pine cone he was carrying for a fresh deer antler more than once, so I know that he knows what I'M lookin' for! I don't have to reward him with treats...just a bunch of "GOOD BOY"s and pats.

Happy training BB!

Hey Shawn! Congrats on your moose paddle...that's awesome! You gotta like it when you find something unexpected like that. It does tend to make you give a whoop! How 'bout a picture?

All I know is that Buck's kickin' my butt this year! He's definitely in the zone. Wish I could smell those things like he does!

Take care Bud!

Here you go Greg. Like I said, it's not a monster. I would guess just a medium sized paddle? Pretty neat find though. It'll be even neater after I have a HUGE muley carved into it! :)

What a terrific dog! Mine that look so much like that spend their days chasing rabbits and gnawing at trees for squirrels; that needs to change. Great finds!

SWEEEEEEET!!! Great find! Congrats, and thanks for sharing your picture Shawn!

I look forward to seeing the muley carved into it next!

Thanks for the tips. A golden doodle is a golden retriever and standard sized poodle mix. Pretty cool looking dog. I'll try your advice.

Thanks LF! I don't know why they did that. I didn't do anything different than what I've done in the past???? Anyway, thanks for getting 'em squared away!
