Refering to compound bows, a starter bow depends on how serious you want to get and how much money you are willing to spend. You don't want to grow out of it the first year. Just find a local dealer and pick a brand they reccommend. Mathews rule.
Just remember not to shoot too far in a hunting situation. If you can't hit a target the size of the animals vital zone standing still with a three shot group, then don't shoot. There are some folks on this site that seem to think that no distance is too far, moving target or not. They should be shooting on the Olympic team shouldn't they? I practice from 50, 40, 30, 20, 30, 40, 50 with the aid of a range finder. My 50 yard groups are nothing to write home about. Four big game animals paid the price this year alone so I do have some credentials.
