hey, i've always hunted rifle and i want to start hunting with a bow also so what would be a good starter bow and how ling should you shoot for before going out and buying a tag and doing the real thing?

Refering to compound bows, a starter bow depends on how serious you want to get and how much money you are willing to spend. You don't want to grow out of it the first year. Just find a local dealer and pick a brand they reccommend. Mathews rule.

Just remember not to shoot too far in a hunting situation. If you can't hit a target the size of the animals vital zone standing still with a three shot group, then don't shoot. There are some folks on this site that seem to think that no distance is too far, moving target or not. They should be shooting on the Olympic team shouldn't they? I practice from 50, 40, 30, 20, 30, 40, 50 with the aid of a range finder. My 50 yard groups are nothing to write home about. Four big game animals paid the price this year alone so I do have some credentials.

Oh yeah. If you shoot for 3 months at least twice a week and feel comfortable, then hunt away.

Colorado,

I would pick up a bow ASAP. Have your local pro give you somthings to work on (form, bringing your pin into the targe and so on). The more you shoot now will only help your confidence. And confidence is everything.
