Just transfered to the Irvine area of Orange county, from Flagstaff AZ. Am looking for bowhunting opportunities in southern Cal. Deer, pigs, rabbits ect. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Also any good shops or ranges in the area would also be a plus.
Thanks for any help,
Gens

Gens, welcome back to So Cal. I have been down here going on eight years now from Northern Cal. I have always gone back up North to hunt, but have finally decided to do some research around home and find some spots to hunt down here. There is an Archery club here in Irvine you might want to look into. They are called El Toro Archers (www.eltoroarchers.org) I think that is their website. Good luck and if I find some decent areas around here I wiil throw you an e-mail.

Hey Brushstomper, thanks for the info, I will check out the archery club. Keep in touch I also am origionally from Northen Cal. and am Looking for a hunting partner.
Take it easy, stay dry.

Gents,
I am from AZ, but am currently overseas. I am moving to SoCal also and have the same questions. Camp Pendleton or Oceanside to be exact. Maybe paths will cross. Any advice on deer hunting in SoCal would be great.

Brad, shoot me an e-mail [email protected] when you get in the area. I will try to have some info by then. Meanwhile I am going to hit the local archery and hunting shops to gain some insight about SoCal hunting. I have gotten a little on the surf flyfishing which sounds very exciting. Be safe overseas.
Talk to ya soon.

You've got quite a bit of opportunity right in your own backyard. There are some areas of access in Orange County that allow archery deer hunting but is closed to rifle due to the close proximety of residential areas. The same holds true for the Los Angeles Archery Hunt (A-31). I've bowhunted these areas for 25+ years and have been fortunate enough to arrow some decent book bucks (CBH).

I've arrowed 6 bucks in the last 3 seasons from these areas (including this year), and if you scout hard (all year) you'll have an edge come archery season.

Look at some maps of the Orange County areas, National Forest (Angeles, etc.) and find some of these areas (rifle closures) and look for access. It may be foot access only requiring some hiking (it does for me), but it's worth it when you locate some decent deer. Good luck.

There sure is. If you map out and scout the foothill areas (rifle closure) from Pasadena to Azusa, you'll find some decent archery hunting. Now that's a large, general area, with some steep hiking, but well worth it in my opinion. Good luck.

Gens, let me know what you find out from that club I have been contimplating getting back into archery again especially around here. I have some good spots up North also. Wouldn't mind hooking up for some scouting and hunting. Keep in touch.

Beaner, let us know when you get in and maybe we can all hook up.

Sounds good. Maybe I can drag some of you back to AZ for a hunt in future too. SHould be arriving to CA in Jan/Feb. Supposed to deploy soon after to Iraq, so I may not be around to hunt much in '05. I will know more after I get there. Thanks.

You left Flagstaff huh? Best of luck to you Gens. Hope all is well with you and your family.

LAST EDITED ON Nov-02-04 AT 11:28PM (MST)[p]Bohntr, Thanks for the advise, always can count on you for sound advise. Brushstomper I will let you know whats up with the archery clubs out here. I will shoot you an e-mail as soon as possible. I am tied down with new job and such at the moment but soon as I can catch my breath I will let you Know.
So Bohntr I am thinking of retiring my old Golden Eagle for a new bow I have a long draw length and prefer a bow which is forgiving in the 38" range, fast would be nice any suggestions from the Archery Buffs would be appreciated.

P.S
Blair I will e-mail you my new info.

gens:

I'd look into the Hoyt ProTec. It has a deflex riser design (forward) which tends to be more forgiving for archers. It also comes with the cam 1/2 system which, in my opinion, is fairly fast and efficient. Most of all, the bow is extremely quiet. Here's the Hoyt website for the ProTec:

Hope it helps and email me if you have some trouble finding some areas down there in OC.
