Son's Antelope

Here's my 12-year-old son's 'lope from Wyoming. We had a great time stalking numerous groups, working to get close enough for him. Twice, we got within 20 yards of bucks, but he couldn't get shots off. He ended up taking this one at about 140 yards. He even got bragging rights on dad - mine only went about 12" and his was just over 13" (for the non-broken side).

Near Kaycee. It was good country - big hills and gullies with mix of grass & sagebrush. The photos don't do it justice. I normally hunt public land, but we ended up on a private ranch due to access issues.

I second the thoughts on antelope for youth. This was our 4th trip together to Wyoming, but the first he was old enough to hunt.

The rifle is a Winchester model 100 autoloader carbine in .308. It was my first rifle and was given to me by my grandfather. It's a great kids gun - plenty of power, light weight, doesn't kick much, shoots plenty accurate out to 200 yards - and there's a quick 2nd shot if you need it. I cut the stock down and put a good pad on it to make it even more kid friendly. He's been shooting it since he was 9.

Congrats to your son and to you for taking the time to bring him hunting. I love it when the youngsters enjoy the outdoors. My Dad has a model 100 rifle in a .308 also. It's a sweet shooting gun too. I can remember when he bought it back in about 1964.
