My son took a nice buck on Thursday a.m. We had been together chasing this one on Sun but couldn't close the deal so he and his hunting buddy went back and closed the deal without me . 425 yard shot. He was hoping for something 170 plus.

These boys hunt hard and the friend killed a very heavy deep forked 22" 4x4 in the General Hunt that he backpacked out by himself 5 miles with a 90 pound pack,

I love these smiles. They work hard when they hunt and deserve this one!

Is that Unit 40 late hunt?? Congrats on the buck

one shot

Nice buck, great mass. Yeah, what unit and could you also give coordinates? Why does everyone always ask that?

Hey Abomb... He's asking it because if the kid shot that buck in November with a rifle one of two things happend. It is either a late hunt with a rifle or the deer was poached. There are no general tags for rifle that run into November. Does that answer your question?

hey Bronco check your facts. "there are no general seasons that run into november".

I know full well what you meant. but it cam off a bit hard.

There are units that do run into November. there are also some youth hunts that run into nov as well. just saying man.

BBB - Why would you assume someone poached a deer if they posted it here? Look at the regs, there were a lot of controlled hunt tags still open on the 19th.

guys, dont pay any attention to that BBB guy. i have inside information that he is half retarded and once slit his dog open in the yukon to keep his hands from freezing. he did love that damn dog though. he also claims that he saw an otter jump from a tree onto a deers back.

oops. forgot to say HELL OF A BUCK. your kid should be proud of that toad.

be careful of BBB.....i also hear he is FBI-RD.....federal bureau of investigation....retard division:)

It was a late season tag. Believe me these kids don't poach. The kid on the left is the son of a regional SW Idaho Fish and Game officer and they not only follow the rules they know them.

I was suprised when this buck taped out at 188 gross. Heavy, High, and even wider than we first thought. Amazing how buck like this can hide all season in general units.

Congrats on a sweet buck. 188 surprised me too, but now that I look again he does have good height and width, backs that curve in and tape well, deceptively good fronts, good eyeguards and that burr point helps as well.

Right on, its good to see that area still has some decent bucks in November. If it is a big deal to keep it quiet what unit he was killed in (which I agree, IT IS!) then you might consider posting pictures with a less revealing backdrop. I known where those pictures were taken just by the backdrop, be careful.

We aren't really trying to keep it a "secret", but I'm not looking to make it easy for those that simply troll websites instead of scouting. I figured others who have been out would recognize that hill.

I killed my buck in this unit in the general season. It's too bad that they let the quads everywhere. It would be nice if they shut down the quads and maybe the general season would be a little better, but these big boys don't come down until the weather and the ladies force them to.

I too was suprised when I taped it, and I even rescored just to be sure. The mass is very good, and there are actually three extra points around the eye guards totaling approx. 6", so that does help. The front forks are over 8", if I remember correct, which is very deceiving unless you look at it from the side. Other than the non-typical points, this buck has less than 2" and is SUPER symmetrical. I was hoping the buck would go mid 170's, so I guess I'm not as good of a judge as I thought.

Now both of my sons, 15 and 18 have killed bigger bucks than me. I guess I'm a better dad than a hunter, and I guess that ain't bad!

Nice deer. Used to be lots of those in that area. It is depressing all the wheeler tracks going down every ridge. That area needs to be shut down or go to a draw and bring back the bucks.

Nice buck, but is a perfect example of why all late buck and bull hunts should be discontinued. It would have been nice if he could have bred some does and been around to get excited about next year, may have sold a few more licences!

Thats a strange arguement man. So by your logic we shouldn't hunt them until after they've had a chance to breed? Is that your main issue? Or is it that they are vulnerable because of the rut?

So you are either saying don't hunt them until they've had a chance to breed... so no hunts until late Nov for bucks and Mid October for bulls. Or just no rut hunts?

LAST EDITED ON Dec-20-09 AT 12:21PM (MST)[p]It's not strange at all, with our deer numbers so low, with absolutly no age class to our bucks, give me one good reason why we are killing these older, larger bucks when they are at their most vulnerable time of the year! The hunt is not getting close enough, it's finding one thats big enough. I'm saying absolutly NO buck hunting after the end of oct.NO RUT HUNTING PERIOD.(For mule deer).
Hell since IDFG started all these late hunts the quality and quanity of Idahos deer & elk hunts have steadily and quickly went down hill.
I'm sorry, once again very nice buck!

Fair enough man, I can get on board with that as long as there are still some late archery rut hunts where the deer will still have a chance.

If everyone else was to give up rut hunts why not the archers? Archery needs to be a draw as far as I am concerned. Unregulated archery hunting is wiping out pronghorns, and is reducing bull and buck numbers in several other hunts. No rut hunts for archery and no open archery hunts. Antelope should be draw only and only in October for all weapons.
Choose your weapon is also high on my list of things I would like to see happen for deer, elk, and antelope. Along with fewer buck tags and Bull tags. At least for the near future. Buck to doe ratios are in the crapper. Lets first build up the breeding bucks and bulls. After that then lets have more hunts. Killing off does to make the buck to doe ratio look better is a poor way in my book. If all you have is 3 deer per square mile 2 does 1 buck the overall ratio is good, Total numbers are bad. Ron

LAST EDITED ON Dec-20-09 AT 06:08PM (MST)[p]Yoyak I'm with ya, hardcore archery hunter, it just doesn't get any better than that, but I'm gonna have to go with Ron on this one for sure! We are all going to have to sacrifice something to get this thing turned around. I just got finished with a late archery hunt yesterday, I am very disgusted with what I saw. I would put my aspirations in hunting more on the quality side, but without quanity we all have nothing!
I actually think the fix isn,t that tough, but are the meat hunters and the hunters that HAVE to kill one every year willing to sacrific some of what Idaho provides them?
Maybe we should move this discussion over to the IDFG topic, I hate to rain on this young fellars parade!

If you read some of my other posts you would see that I have said if everyone really wants to improve the Quality of the deer in this state we need to shut down buck hunting for 2 years. If you think about it the best this isn't to stap these limited late season hunts, which already takes big bucks, but really limit the statewide deer hunt.

Are you all willing to not hunt deer for 2 years??

Late hunts at this point in time are complete BS, and yes I've been waiting since 1992, I've purchased 3 maybe 4 tags in that time with no harvest data to report! The 92-93 winter devastated the deer herds in eastern Idaho, they were never allowed to recover! I spent most of my time chasing Elk, but we keep an eye out for deer. Problem is, I see very few deer, (any deer) its more of a numbers thing than size.(But don't get me wrong I'm all into quality). All three of my jobs keep me on the mountain and on deer winter ranges for a majority of the year, what I see is very disheartening. Your son shot an awsome buck and I congratulate him, it sounds like he earned it. I would love for my 11yr old son and 10yr old daugther to enjoy what my brothers and I enjoyed in the 70's & 80's.
So to answer your question, Yes, I've been waiting for years!
