What do I have a picture of here? Why and/or what in the world? If any of you have some "Basque shepherding" background, maybe you can explain this possible coyote bait.

No, I didn't do a taste test to see if it was with strychnine.

Take your boot off and scratch around with your toe under the leg. You may be forced to get coyote ugly on your self. :)

This is typically not a coyote bait as they are a bit smarter than that. Not saying you would not catch one, but this setup has been used a lot for bobcats. You hang it just high enough that the cat has to jump for it and when they land they land on the trap. Usually a dog will circle the bait and not touch it for some reason. My grandpa used to trap during the depression and this was his "setup for cats". Just my to cents worth.

Yeah, my dogs didn't even check it out or find a buried trap. I hadn't thought about cats - that does make more sense. I didn't see anything on the ground though...I didn't stick around though in case the dogs eventually found something to mess with. We have come across a trapped cat in the past though - didn't have my camera - just my skis. That's fun; two goofy dogs that obviously don't have "cat training" and a trapped bobcat.

Dawgs,

I do not trap, but as mentioned my Grandpa did for years to get through the depression. Now keep in mind this was quite a few years ago, but he said it is tough to trap a dog, but heck a bobcat is about a dumb as they come. He said he rarely caught a dog in that set up but it was sure fire trap for a cat. heck someone could have just done it for fun to and had no trap or someone could have stolen the trap--not sure how fresh the leg was. My Grandpa used to use a rabbit in his.

Anyway glad that nothing happened to your dogs--that would be a real shame!!!

Yeah not sure I would want to mess with any of those "kitties" no matter what. Something about all of those claws and the speed at which they move.

PS thanks for the pictures!
