Sheep Applications

The deadline for sheep applications has passed. This year I put in for Area 1 with 15 preference points. I have no idea if I will draw or not. Last year, everyone with 15 pts did draw it. Area 1 is extremely tough country and the sheep are scattered. I have hiked extensively in the area and know many of the "secret" backdoor trails into the unit. I know where I will concentrate my efforts. I plan to go DIY and on foot. I have accumulated most of the gear I will need for overnight stays in the backcountry. My trekking poles will get a serious workout as will my 61 year old legs.

I am not going into this process thinking I will take some monster ram. That is not important to me. The first 5-6 year old ram that I can get close to will be in jeopardy. I plan to hunt with my .300 Winchester Magnum topped with a 3-12 Swarovski scope. The rifle is dialed in using 180 grain Nosler Accubonds. I feel comfortable with shots out to 400 yards. I know most of the outfitters who work this country and with the exception of Meade Dominick, I don't anticipate bumping into many of them.

Only time will tell if I am going sheep hunting this year.

Good luck in the draw. Unit 1 is on my list as well, I am sitting at 16 PPs. I will just get a point this year as I have a sheep hunt in NWT this year that will use up most of my available time. Next year will be a toss up between unit 1 or 6. My only hesitation on Unit 1 is that I have never been in that country and don't know much about it. Unit 6 I have tromped around in quite a bit.

Sounds like you have unit 1 figured out. Most of my goals on a sheep hunt sound like yours. I am not overly concerned with trophy size as much as I am with having an adventure. From what I hear Unit 1 fills that bill. Good luck and I am looking forward to seeing your hero shots this fall.

Mh, I assume you're a resident?

Your odds at drawing 1 should be good. a guy I hunt with hunted area 1 a couple years ago and took a 172 ram . like you say it's not the easiest hunt but the quality is as good as any.

Good luck.

I am a resident and I live within the boundaries of Area 1. I very much want to start hiking into Area 1 but will likely wait until April. This year's weather has been very mild and the snowpack is below average.

If I were you I'd really really really consider trying to line up a few horses. no knotheads but good mountain horses. there's nothing you could do that would improve your odds more than that.

Good luck Mr MightyHunter.
I hope you draw the tag since I'm looking forward to your report and some pics. I know what you mean about the trekking poles getting a workout. Guys of our age really benefit from them. Good luck!

Mulecreek,
Why area 6, other than you've tromped around it? Is there something I don't know (which is usually the case)? I thought that hunt area was the mother of all mothers with low success and difficult terrain... but that's only hearsay.

Good luck to you. It would be cool if you could keep us informed! I hope to be in your shoes one day. I appreciate the way you are approaching the hunt . . .

Zeke,

6 is my lucky number. Everything you have heard is true. I only put in for it because I want to support the G&F with application fees. Nothing to see in 6, move on.

I hope you draw!
