Anybody been out shed hunting lately? Snow might be a problem right now but i have heard some are starting to drop their antlers. Anybody know of any good areas around southwestern idaho to go? Thanks for the help.

they have been dropping since before christmas, at one of my chucker hunting spots.
there has got to be atleast 400 to 600 dear in that area.
but i can't say where..

Seriously!!....
There's 2 dozen strings of messages on MM about the condition of the deer herds, the impacts of wolves, the neglegence of IDFG, yada yada yada, and all you guys can think about is getting out and looking for sheds in the middle of January! Give 'em a darn break, those sheds will still be there in May.

Not all shed hunters go out and push all the animals out of their range. If you stay back and glass for the first 3-4 hours of the day and then follow the trail the game took from the feeding area you can get in and out of a spot with out disturbing any of the animals in their bedding area. Its as simple as that.

I agree with you. Leave them alone this year for a change. The sheds are not worth stressing the animals. Ron

I dont give a damn what you say, if you are on the winter range, you are disturbing the critters, and IF you are out there looking for the sheds this time of year, you should give the deer a break. I hope they outlaw it our put a season on it!

Don't pick a fight with an old man. If he is too old to fight, he'll just kill you.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-10-09 AT 10:45AM (MST)[p]well for one thing i am not a shed hunter,, and i don't care for those that do, while the game is still on winter range..it just makes me sick to see all of the hero's out there running the deer around picking up sheds and getting pictures.. i have hunted birds in the area i talked about above for more than 25 years, all of a sudden about 8 years ago the shed hunters just started pounding the place. and there ain't a single one of them that is friendly, they all act like you are on there turf or something..
the land owners there are locking up gates and posting there land like crazy these days..i also think if folks just gotta do it there should be a season,
say starting about June..
the thing is if they do outlaw it or make a season,, it will most likely hurt bird hunters in the process..

if youre out this time of year busting brush looking for headgear, you are a sad example of a hunter and nothing more than selfish. you can get in and out without disturbing a single animal? get real. better not see you in my stomping grounds!

Not trying to take sides but how is bird hunting through an area blasting away less intrusive than walking through it looking for sheds????

I'm not saying either one is good for the animals. Just curious about the reasoning.

it 's pretty simple really,, just don't hunt around the deer..
keep your distance..

my worry is if things go the way they did in Utah, when they put a season on shed hunting.
(i may be wrong but i think they closed areas off to all human entry)

with the way things are going with our deer herds, losing wintering ground to developement, maybe thats not a bad idea. im not a "nut" when it comes to shed hunting, but maybe its best to stay completely out of those areas during the vital time of year that deer need to stay alive. whats more important...finding some monster sheds or having the chance to shoot that monster buck that dropped those sheds?

I know that last year when they closed down some areas on the Boise front to human entry it was not a big deal and I think for the most part people complied. Works for me. But you know there will always be the guy who wants to beat everyone else to the sheds and will ignore the signs.

I say put the restrictions in place, enforce it and fine the heck out of anyone that ignores it. Evern take away hunting privelages.

They tried a shed season here in eastern Idaho didn't work for above cited reasons, what they have now is closed areas for recreating purposes, not really effective either unless ALL entry is prohibited.

Get your hunt on!!

I like to hike the hills to stay in shape during the winter.. and from what I've seen, the deer still have there antler attatched. No sheds yet, so Shed freaks... stay home, there still on the deer around Idaho.
