so last weekend i went to the book cliffs for my first time ever. overall it wasn't that good of a trip but at least we got one pig. the way this antler came off the head we measured him out at 40" wide give or take a few inches. well on saturday night i had about 3 hours to shed hunt but ended up taking the wrong way to get to where i was told to try so i pulled off in a spot that didn't look very good but i figured better than nothing. not 3 minutes out of the truck i got a small 3 that was pretty old. other than that i found 2 but all were really old and only one was of any size. my dad got nothing that day. next day i got up to go to where i was told and looked around and found a few good spots and finally decided on one. once again less than 3 minutes out of the truck i got another small one that was way old. then later i found a set of small 4's that were one year old and my dad found a fresh 4, off the same buck, about 100 yards away. Then on the way out we decided to try one more spot. ended up hitting a really awesome looking valley with a lot of sign that was a ways away from the road but it was covered with 4 wheeler tracks. ended up going into the steeper cedars to get away from the 4 wheelers and my dad found a pig of a horn about 10 yards from 4 wheeler tracks. it is an awesome yet ugly horn that would have been cool on the head being at about 40" wide. although he would have been wide he would have been lucky to score in the 150's. my dad said he almost didn't pick it up because it looked so much like a stick. said the base was pointing at him and it didn't look right. then he bino'ed it and said he thought it was way old and debated on walking over to it. man was he glad he did. not his best scoring shed but this has the most amount of horn of any shed he has ever got.
here is the set and the single off the same buck. surprising how little he grew in one year but it definately is the same buck, bases are exact and everything.
here is the pig my dad got. as you can see the first split is way high. 13 inches before he splits and he is over 5" around the whole way up to that first split
also he has a concave base. first find like this for me or my dad.
and yes i know this may not look like a 40" wide buck from this shed but the way it sets on the head it almost lays flat out. compared to a normal buck it is 20" to the middle of the skull which makes overall around 40". would score around the high 140's.
Also for any of you that have hit the book cliffs, how are the areas of indian ridge and willow creek for big sheds. we got these on indian ridge and were thinking about hitting the willow creek wma. just wondering if we were in the right area for the big ones.
