No offence or anything but why do you shed hunt.In hunting you have to track down a deer and shoot it.All shed hunting is is like playing find the easter eggs. Im not trying to be mean to ppl who like it but plz tell me why u like it

How many deer can you shoot each year? For the average person it is one or none....so shed hunting extends the season....sometimes you see game you would never see while actually hunting...great exercise.....spotting something on the ground that is the same color as the ground is a challenge and everyone likes a challenge....When you pick up an antler usually you are the first to see it at that stage and no one can ever experience what you had just done with that same antler.....some sell them for money...some do it for a living...and best of all in most states you can do it year round...even when every other season is closed you can still go out and look around
Just a few reasons

I took one of my buddies out to an area where we thought we might find a few sheds....he is really into the elk more than deer so I figured if he finds a shed it will get him hooked....well he didnt find a deer shed first he found a real nice 7 point elk shed off about a 340 bull....he has gone with me about every time I have gone since....That first antler is always the one that gets ya....you always gotta have bigger!

Shed hunting can be, and most often is as challening as normal hunting. It's just like anything else; sometimes you need to be lucky. As it is, I'm not going to encourage every yahoo out there to stomp around in the bush. I have a passion for shed hunting and although I enjoy it tremendously, the fewer people out there, the more fun us die hard shed hunters will have.

I started shed antler hunting about 25 years ago. It was a lot better then. I was the only one in the aria that took the time to pick up an antler. Now almost every one will pick up an antler if they find it. Back then I could find 30 or 40 antlers in a day a at least one would be a good one. I quikly became addited to shed antler hunting. Shed hunting has changed the way I think about deer. When I was young I thought that deer just wanderd the hills. After finding antlers from the same buck year after year in the same aria i realized this was not true. I thought the every buck would grow big antlers if they lived long enough. shed antlers showed me alot about antler genetics. After finding mutliple years of antlers from 100s of bucks I found out how many of the bucks never get better than 150 and how uncomon the 180 class buck are in my aria. Shed hunting has made made me a better hunter. Now I am to the point were hunting is fun but I would rather find a set of 80 inch antlers than shoot the 180 class buck. I admit that I am a little diffrent so if you don't want to end up like me don't try shed hunting.

I want to say I don't do it for me but it is awsome when you take a son or daughter out thats not old enough to hunt but they have found a set of antlers to hang on the wall next to yours and they get to say that theres are bigger than yours! ok I lied I do enjoy it to

Hello, my name is Jon I am a shed nut. The reason I hunt is because of that one chance you might see the trophy of a lifetime. Sheds are great because they are trophys that aren't going anywhere. I love sitting atop a high peak and mapping out in my mind where all the sheds are then I make 1 sweep and get them all. I might be crazy but I swear the last 20 yards to any antler I usually end up running to it. I also have a habbit of looking through my binos when I am only 70-80 yards away from the bone to make sure its still there......or something like that. I also love it because is is a good sign of whats to come next year. I will post some pictures of my Oregon sheds I think you will all enjoy.

Great, Now I am scouring the hills outside my dorm room for antlers LOL!!!!!

I love the outdoors and mule deer. What a great way to have a great time roaming the hills all year long!

Traks,

Where are you in Oregon?? Depending on what dorm you live in, there are some good opportunities for shed hunting... unless you're UO or EOU, then there's nothing ;-)

From the land of Big Sticks,

I am over here at EOU and I have my spotting scope set-up so I can look through my window, my roomate thinks I'm crazy!!!

I live In Lostine traks, so we could hook up and do some shed hunting. What dorm are you in? That was a nice buck that you killed, was that a cathrine creek buck? I killed a big 5X5 buck in the minam last week. I am guide elk season in the minam, so if you want info on where to find elk or sheds, I can hook you up.

I am in East Dorion over here in EOU. I cant wait till the branch bull rifle opener.

Old oregon, I have an LOP tag for the ukiah unit. I would assume the bull is in iether the Mt.emily, Walla walla, or wenaha.

For me, it's simply for the love, and respect of the animals and their headgear, not necessarily whether i actually kill them or not. I love and appreciate them all! I highly reccomend the Jackson Hole antler auction in May, for anyone who loves big sheds!! slamdunk

It just grows on you....you can have just a good of a time shed hunting than actual hunting, in my opinion. Most hunters are antler addicts, well shed hunting is pretty much the same thing except the animal isn't killed.....You're always hoping to find the Big Ones!
