LAST EDITED ON Dec-21-08 AT 11:27AM (MST)[p]I plan on shed hunting multiple places this year but i dont have the time to scout every place to see where the deer are during the winter so does anyone have any tips or info on how to get a general idea of where the deer would be on most places? Any information would be greatly appreciated thanks.

South facing hillsides where the snow melts off is a good place to start. I like feeding areas. Some people like bedding areas or hiking along fencelines. Where ever you are finding sign is always a good place to look.

Most importantly is don't get in too big of a hurry. It is too early to tell but it looks like we might be in for a long winter again. Please don't pressure the deer until the snow is gone and they have moved off the winter range. If we don't police ourselves the state will do it for us.

Don't forget to take some good "as they lay" photos and post them on monster muleys.

Good luck

Theres gonna be plenty of shed hunting unscouted ground between Kemmerer and Pinedale this year....

This will be what Utah will see if things keep getting worse.

There is a bunch of wildlife management areas in utah that are closed from december 1st to may 1st, has been for years. They are usually pretty good places to pick up a bone or two

It will be interesting to see how many posts pop up this year about people harassing deer and elk out on the wintering ground. I also look forward to seeing everybody ##### and moan about shed seasons and trying to make a valid arguement about how it's a bad idea and that they should have the "right" to shed hunt whenever they want to. The wheels on the bus go round and round.

It's like having a bunch of fat girls at an all you can eat buffet, they know they shouldn't but they just can't help themselves

Stay classy Utah!

To answer the original question, you just have to do a lot of walking! Not through closed winter range though. Some areas are not as productive as others for various reasons related to animal numbers, and proximity to food, water, and cover during the winter months. If you find a decent spot, try to find more with similar characteristics, but don't get tunnel vision or you might miss good areas.

I live in Texas and shed hunt New Mexico once a year. I don't get a chance to scout the deer and elk to see where they are wintering so I just talk to the locals when I am there. They are usually pretty helpful. Last year I was hiking a certain canyon and was only finding old sheds. When i talked to a local, he said the elk were wintering in another canyon. When I hiked that canyon, I found a fresh elk shed.

Try the locals. I think it'll help.

It says closed to motorized vehicles, but if a CO sees you he will bust you and chew your ass out, maybe even give you a ticket! Ask SS about that! ha ha

I've never had problem with CO's in the areas closed to motorized vehicles. I'm always on foot anyway, so it's not an issue. The instance you're referring to had some additional regs I was unaware of in my younger days. Still wasn't harassing wildlife by any means and I just had a chat with the CO and he was cool about the whole thing.

Shed,
Are they still packing up there ? I went out 2 weeks ago with my camera and could only find a few small bucks. I'm off Wednesday and thought about heading back up that way for some pics but it seems like they start to drop about now. Is it worth the trip for pictures or am I going to find them missing half or all of their headgear ?
