LAST EDITED ON Jan-08-09 AT 08:19AM (MST)[p]I have never actually went shed hunting. But I have thought about giving it a go. It would get me out to find some more areas, and getting to know my areas better. But when is the best time, and terrain to start looking??? I am located in south west idaho...

Any place that you can find deer or elk through feb-april is a good basic starting point, check bedding areas, feeding areas, and sun facing slopes. Other than that alot can just be trial and error.

i like to figure out where they are feeding and start there then follow the beat down paths to the bedding areas. i live in southern utah and we dont get much snow and everything is burned on the south slopes so i tend to stick to the north slopes. mostly just gettin out there and putin the miles on your boots. you'll learn a lot your first year. good luck.

You have already gotten some good tips. I just started hunting for sheds a couple of years ago. I think you will find it extremely fun. I don't find that many sheds because I go to an area that others shed hunt also but it's cool when you do find one,a great exercise program and you can't beat being outdoors !!!

Good luck !

Whiplash? Where abouts in southwest Idaho? I know a few spots you will be able to go. You will find lots of sheds, however most of them will be smaller 4's and 3's. Nothing with too much mass. But you will find a lot of them!!! I used to go over in southwest Idaho but now its to far to drive with gas, so I would like to give you my spots as a newbie. It gets addicting fast.

I started shed hunting here in Idaho a few years back and have had decent luck. I am also in southwest Idaho and have had my best luck on south slopes and brush pockets. Now i heard someone is giving away a spot here in Idaho. If I still qualify as a newbie a would love to check this spot out. Thanks

Both whip n IDshedhead..... You might need to travel a bit more north towards sun valley or Haley if you are interested
