Now I've heard you can train a dog to find sheds, but how do you train an atv to find them? I know it can be done because I see atv tracks all over in my shed hunting spots. Whats the secret? Do you need a bigger motor, tires, winch, ego, More ignorance to laws, etc. etc.? Just wondering what tactics are involved in training an atv to gofind sheds?

First of all you have to be lazy, hate to walk, willing to break the law, and have no respect for the deer or hills. Thats what I've seen time and time again on my shed spots too!

BLooDTRaCKeR, does it make you feel good to mock peoples post and bring up subjects that everyone is a little sore too???

No, it doesn't make me feel good. Whats your point? I didn't post this topic with the intentions of offending anyone. I'm just trying to pass the time between the meat hunt and the shed hunt. Didn't mean to ruffle anyones feathers.

I'll ruffle some feathers.....there is a new BLM Ranger in town. And I'm gonna give him a lot of illegal ATV rider business this spring.

I ride my 4 wheeler to where I need to go, then I get off and walk the rest of the day. I don't see what the big deal is.

The big deal is that you are picking up sheds that someone else thinks belong to them. Everybody is being very selfish about sheds and shed hunting, and some people will do anything to get the upper hand. Some think more sheds can be had by illegally riding off road and gridding an area on a quad or motorcycle. Boot riders feel this is unfair and will call the local authorities on everybody they see riding a quad to try to reduce the competition. The bottom line is, while everybody is beating each other up about what the real problem is, our local governments try to deal with it by making un-enforcable laws that only apply to the law abiding and the criminals end up with all of the antlers which they quickly sell on eBay. I buy a few of the biggest ones for my (one of each) collection and everybody thinks I'm a lazy bastage because I don't get out in the hills as much anymore??????? I sold my quad because it wasn't as useful as my jeep, and I don't like shed hunting on foot because some jackass has already gridded the area and there's not much left to find.

THE BEST SHED HUNTING IS ON EBAY!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm just adding my turd to the sh** pile. Is it getting deep yet?

I agree with what you are saying and I might try the ebay thing. I also use horses and can cover a hell of alot more ground than a walker or 4 wheeler. When are you guys going to start bitching about my horses?

THERE'S HORSE SH** EVERYWHERE!!!!!!!! THOSE STINKY PIECES OF WALKING DOG FOOD ARE SPREADING NOXIOUS WEEDS ALL OVER THE PLACE. YOU CAN'T DRINK FROM ANY WATER SOURCES WITHOUT GETTING SOME DISEASE, PLUS THEIR HOOVES ARE LEAVING POCK MARKS ON OTHERWISE PRISTINE SOIL AND DAMAGING FRAGILE ECO-SYSTEMS. THERE SHOULD BE A LAW!!!

There, how's that for turning the heat up for no reason?

I don't think anyone objects to someone riding an ATV on a road or trail back to a point, then walking or gridding for sheds. If think the problem is riding the ATV's through the brush looking for sheds like the seat of the ATV is attached to your arse. I don't own one but I can sure see how they would help get me back deep into some good shedding areas.

I detest fourwheelers during hunting seasons, sheds or game.

It used to be that a man would receive a return on his time and effort invested in hiking farther than other hunters, but no more. This was proven to me this deer season when I hiked an hour down into a water hole only to be greeted by a fourwheeler-hunter telling me I "must be nuts to hike this far in". On another day, I hunted in a burn area and was entertained with the constant sounds of "trailblazing" fourwheeler hunters. I'm not going to say that I have never used a four-wheeler to drag out a private-land buck, but I knew I was not ruining someone else's hunt...

Shed specific irks with fourwheelers are no different, there is little reward for hard work...

Just my two cents...

I'm glad you guys have no problems with a side x side (Rhino's). Because I can cover more ground and carry more sheds out of the hill's in less time.

I hate ATV's also!!!!!!

It is all going to come to a head, Colorado is taking this issue head on. We are our own worst enemy. Check the link out in the general hunting forum. Guess we humans just can't get along without laws and rules restricting everything we do.

I am going to step up my game from hiking and skip riding a ATV and just use my truck with a heated cab. haha

Shooter Where are them horses at when I need them to pack my load of my own horns off the mountains?

What does everyone think about the new way of setting up a digital camera that automatically sends pictures to your computer or cell phone when a deer, elk bigfoot whatever walks by?

How does that work? Is it a digital camera or a trail cam? It sounds cool. especially when some one tries to steal it. haha

Too late for what? I didn't mean I was inventing it, I already know all about them.

You can't get your 4 wheeler or your horse on the path less travled where I find most of the sheds I pickup!

Time in the hills is always worth more than money

Oh trust me my horse has been places it shouldnt be and loved every second of it. I'm sure we could follow or should I say pass you to your spot.

i take my horse into some pretty gnarly stuff and we come out packing way more bone than you can pack on your back. then again, i have walked over fresh wheeler tracks and found some pretty good ones that they must have missed by driving too damned fast.

I set my dad up one day. I put a nice brown four point deer antler right in the middle of a clearing in the sagebrush, tines up 10-20 feet off the road. My dad in no way drives fast or out of control... I laughed my butt off as he drove right on by it looking in its direction and looking on the other side of the road. Boy was he ticked when I walked out there when he turned up to where i was walking out in the clearing and picked it up again......

LAST EDITED ON Dec-22-07 AT 01:22PM (MST)[p]I agree with nontypical 250, and shooter57, on riding four wheelers to were your going to hike. I had a awsome spot out to Pilot mountain, for elk sheds the last year I went out there was four wheeler tracks everywhere. And it pissed me off. I believe in getting to where your going then walking or riding horses.

I agree that ATV's are a great tool for hunters. But to many "BONE HEADS" are ruining it for the rest of us. They take their ATV's everywere there not suposed to and force the forest service and DWR to step up enforcement on the use of ATV's. Soon there will be a license and season on shed hunting all because of a few BONE HEADS are to lazy and lack the true ambition of a hunter today. We used to be able to retrieve game with ATV's, but now we can't because a few dummies would see a ATV track and have to follow it. Don't you see that our actions today are a direct reflection on the laws made tomorrow.
Us true sportman need to step it up and help the DWR and forest service enforce the laws by giving them tips and information leading to the arrest of those that are destroying our past time. I am so sick of people saying that they don't want to get invovled in turning someone in. Talk about a coward that does not care enough about hunting to lift a finger to make a difference. I thought that all that type of people lived in France. I would like to think that hunters are people that have a backbone and stand up for their rights and privledges, not someone who is affraid a makeing a difference.
I hike and ride my horses to find sheds and hunt. when I see an ATV track I start hunting the ATV. I have confronted many BONEHEADS and have turned them in, I am not affraid of them, only of what they can do to destroy my experiences as a sportsman.
The best info you can give is a license plate, vehicle description, and GPS.
You already don't like them for being in your hunting area in the first place, so why should you care about what they will think of you when you turn them in.

What if an ATV rider decides they don't wany you out there riding your horse all over their shedding grounds? They contact the local authorities and turn you in for leaving deep pock marks and horse crap full of noxious weed seeds all over the place. It doesn't matter what method you have for picking up sheds, someone will not like it, and complain. Then, the authorities will try to pass another stupid law restricting our recreational activities. The part I hate is that the laws they pass don't fix the problems, they only cause new ways for me to get into trouble.

The best part about riding horses while shed hunting is when some joker rides up on an atv, i just dab a loop over his scrawny neck and drag him to the truck. That way, every time he ties his tie, he remembers and stays on the road or trail. A lot of you guys are lazy, useless bastar#$! and need to see YOU WILL cause states to make laws because of your fatrolls. If you take your ATV somewhere it should not be, you get it confiscated. PERIOD! Or you get drug through the sage behind a horse. It's up to you!

dieleonard you're a dandy...first off riding a horseback is LEGAL!!! Second the pockmarks in the ground aerate it for things to grow--its been done for thousands of years by ALL four legged critters. Third, noxious weeds??? what about that four-wheeler you pack around in the back your pick-up from point A to Point B?? My horses eat native grass so they ain't spreading around anything that isn't already here. As for the sheds, they are for everybody to enjoy not just certain individuals (Human or Animal)You are barking up the wrong tree...

Longun - you really missed my sarcasm. Your horses are just fine. I was just trying to make a point about how people seem to think only lazy people ride ATV's, but riding a horse is O.K.

By the way, speaking of horses, all you horse riders out there, please don't let your horses crap in the middle of MY forest serice trails!!!!!!! If they do, the least you could do would be to get of your lazy behind and shovel it into the bushes. Thanks for being considerate of others.

O.K.---sorry Die, by the way I hardly use a horse trail anyway but I will gladly oblige if your in this neck of the woods. HEHHE

i know a guy who's horse got hit by an arrow. i think the shooter ended up worse off than the horse.

Do you see how selfishness can get out of hand? This is childish. Let's all just be considerate of others. You and I are not the only ones out there, and your interests shouldn't override mine.

WOW!!! You guys are wearing this one out!!! Give up already. Anyway you get out there atv, horse, or on foot, it will always be first one out gets the bone!!!! Good luck.
