This was in my local newspaper. It kind of reminds us to always be prepared before we go out antler hunting. Thank God they found him alright.
Hunter found
A man who got separated from a fellow hunter while searching for deer and elk antlers Sunday afternoon was found by county Search and Rescue crews early Monday morning.
According to information released by officials at the Coconino County Sheriff's Office, the two men had been hunting for antlers on Forest Service Road 226 east of Interstate 17. The two became separated at about 1:30 p.m. One hunter returned to the vehicle, but the other hunter did not return.
At 7:30 p.m., the hunter contacted the sheriff's office. SAR crews, using four-wheel-drive vehicles, all-terrain vehicles and trackers, searched the area during a heavy snow storm.
SAR crews found a set of tracks, matching the size of shoe worn by the lost hunter, were discovered on another nearby Forest Service road. Crews followed the tracks until they found the hunter at about 2:40 a.m. The hunter was in good condition and had made a survival shelter for himself.
SAR officials would like to remind residents recreating in the outdoors to be prepared for an emergency and stay advised of weather conditions. Carry a pack with essential gear, signaling equipment and appropriate clothing for the conditions. This advise goes even for day hikes, because a day hike can turn into a serious survival situation quickly.
