Shed Hunter Disappointment

Went to look at a few deer that i have been admiring here in central utah during the winter months. I was watching four good bucks one that was a nice buck(probably close to thirty inches), not too far from a main road. While i was watching these four deer (along with about forty other does in close proximity), i watched three guys hike straight up the mountian at these deer to look for sheds that I'm not sure if they were hoping they would drop if they pushed these deer. Or maybe they had seen some sheds through their binos in close proximity to these deer. Well i was disappointed to see these shed hunters push these deer a half mile at a full run. Any way i was a little pissed, but i kept watching the deer since i could still see them through my scope. I watched these bucks for about another half hour when another shed hunter hiked up over a ridge to the north and pushed the same herd of deer four ridges to the south almost to where they originally were. At this point i was just a little pissed at these shed hunters and let one of the guys know about it when he walked off of the mountain. I know not all shed hunters are like these people, and most respect the wildlife, especially in there winter habitats. But with the lack of winter range in this area and the close proximity that these deer are to alot of the major roads in northern and central utah i think that there are just too many people bothering these deer in the winter months for nothing more than a horn that would have no value on my wall, or meat in my freezer. I was opposed to the shed hunting season dates, but in these areas i'm thinking that it is almost something that needs to be done for the sake of our deer. The deer that are hurt most in the winter time are the bucks, and young deer. I think more caution and more respect for the wildlife should be enforced here. Rather than peoples need (or greed) for horns.

Please! By all means! If you see people harassing wildlife, turn them in! The last thing I want is shed hunting season dates. People would still bother the deer and elk. No matter what you do, or how many laws you have, there will always be someone who just doesn't care. That is why we need to police ourselves. Take pictures, video, license #'s to the appropriate law enforcement agency.

We need to take an active stance and protect our resources and our way of life!

Just out of curiosity, can you tell the canyon name you were in? Contact me in private if you wish.

I didn't even think it would be illegal. But i was just to the north of american fork canyon. I don't know any names or licenses plates though. But now that i know do you just call the local fish and game, or local police.

I talked to a fish and game officer last week about this very type of issue and he actually told me that contacting the UHP is the very best and fastest way to get a response. They will then dispatch by radio the closest F&G Officer. This is the phone number that the Officer gave me to call for central UT issues. (801) 374-7030. I actually called a guy in 2 weeks ago for pushing the deer and a county sheriff showed up within about 5 minutes. He waited at the guys truck until he came back down and then talked to him. I guess he didn't give him a ticket but he warned him and acutally could have sited him if he wanted to. I was glad to see them show up so quickly and actually do something to help!

Good luck and call that number next time you see a problem.

Thanks for your quick and informative responses on this issue. In the beginning i was unaware this was illegal, just thought it was unethical. And will be more proactive in the future.

you guys start calling F&G and everyone else you'll DEFINATELY have some laws in the future. I don't care who you are...if you're a shed hunter, you're gonna push deer at some time or another and I'm sure there isn't a person out there that hasn't. Those guys might not have intended to push deer? I wasn't there so I don't know the situation but it does happen. I was out yesterday walking a ridge I'd been glassing for about a week...didn't see one deer on it but did see where I'd kicked up a couple out of their beds but never seen or heard them run off. When I got way up on top and started down the other ridge to come down I heard a pickup down at the bottom....then I hear tons of gunfire, talking, etc. so glass way over at the other ridge and see 2 guys with 3 dogs hiking up and shooting talking and glassing for sheds....talk about some obnoxiuos shed hunters and if ya want to see wildlife get spooked....bring all your damn dogs ta boot!

PS....on a brighter note, found a dead 4x4 whitetail today so I took his skull...first fresh horns of the year....

LAST EDITED ON Jan-24-05 AT 02:01PM (MST)[p]Doesn?t matter what issue you're dealing with, the radicals and the extremists are the ones that ruin things for everyone else! I agree that you will bump deer now and then. But when people are deliberately pushing and chasing deer, there's a problem! I for one would rather do something about the issue now, as opposed to sitting on my butt waiting for big brother to step in and say enough is enough.

As far as more laws are concerned, it's just like the gun control issues. We need to enforce the ones we already have, not create more! Maybe some of you caught the front page of the Daily Herald (UT. County) today. The cover story was concerning shed hunters and the harassment of the winter animals. Hello people!!! Pull your heads out, people are watching. I'll pick up sheds all day long, but that last thing I want to do is pressure the deer. Wait till the deer feed out of the area, then go in and look around. It's not worth doing harm to the animal. And I don't want to get turned in for harassment, cause I can guarantee I'll make the call if I see it happening.

?It's all about the gut pile?

ANYTIME you go out in the woods you're gonna harrass animals period.....you are there. So when is it harrassment and when is it not harrassment? Is it harrassment only when hiking and pickin up a shed and not harrassment when just hiking? Where do ya draw the line? I understand that animals need to be left alone and not pushed during tuff times....but if it's tuff and and deep snows...it's also too tuff for me and most others so I'm not out? Not sure where you hunt but where I live it's steep and brushy much like the Wasatch and deer just bounce around a ridge maybe 50 to 150yds and hole up till you're gone. I guess you could vote in a season and at 12:00 noon on May 1st everone could be lined up at the gates for the "Great Horn Rush"???? I guess you could make it illegal to pick up a horn to keep the shed hunters out...but then what about the hikers? They're doing a good job of shutting these woods down already and like I said before...just keep calling F&G and you'll have more laws soon enough. Lets hear your solution?

Oneguy, are you feeling alright? Cause you're obviously not seeing my point! I'll try one more time to clearly state my concern. When people push, chase or harass deer in an attempt to make them shed their antlers, they are breaking the law and inflicting serious harm and need to be reported...period! As I have said in my previous posts, I am against a shed hunting season, and against additional laws. But I fear that if we sit idly by and not report a crime, the outcome will be far worse. I spend more time in the hills observing, filming, photographing animals than any other hobby I take enjoyment in. I want to be able to do these things until I can't get my weak butt out of bed in the morning.

I live along the Wasatch and know the characteristics of the animals also. So please don't patronize me about the habits of Mule deer. I'm sorry we both don't agree that as sportsman and hunters we have an obligation to the animals we revere to do what we can't to protect them from those that abuse them. Let me pose a question to you: What would you do if you witnessed someone poaching a big game animal. Would you sit there silently observing in fear that another anti-poaching law would be passed? Or would you make the call?

?It's all about the gut pile?

<<When people push, chase or harass deer in an attempt to make them shed their antlers, >>

Well that's a whole different story....I'd call in a heartbeat! I'd also call about any poaching also...in fact last shed season I found about 8-10 dead bulls, horns removed, full skeletons, very suspicious circumstances....called F&G, left message...they never did call back.....

I'm also not trying to patronize you about anything...just stating some of the things I see in my neck of the woods...

I would hate to have more laws to worry about breaking. If there was a shed hunting season, how the heck would that work. If I picked up a shed while out hiking and it wasn't during the season dates would I be breaking the law. Even if I just happened upon the antler in my travels. Guys harrassing deer just to get them to drop their horns is definately wrong, and they should not get away with it, but I just can't stomach any more G&F rules and regulations.

grrio,

word travels fast.. Alot of us locals heard about what happened on saturday.. (not from MM.com). As far as calling f&g or police, I think thats a catch all solution to those types of activities. I understand the argument over publicity of those types of events, however, if these situations arent reported, they will continually increase. I can tell you first hand the police in that area WILL respond to those calls. I also know the people in that area will also call the police when they are witnessed.

straightshooter,

Its unfortunate that so many restrictions have been placed on wildlife, but there will always be a few bad eggs in the group that will force law enforcement to take such strict action. I doubt a shed hunting season would be a solution. I can assure you that a law/restriction on shed hunting would only effect the honest hunters. Not the people who are harrassing game. These types of events should be reported and enforced.

If someone is trying to scare deer that is one thing walking around on a hillside is another. I went hunting coyotes this morning. There were deer in the area, as I hiked along the deer just moved around me. None of them seemed to be spooked at all. Are people supposed to stay off the mountain all winter? As I drove back home, I saw two trucks that had hound boxes? in the back. IM sure they were out trying to thin out the cats. I also saw several snowmobilers heading up the hill. All winter activities are going to move some deer. If someone is out chasing deer in the winter turn them in but don't go calling the cops if someone is up enjoying the land that belongs to then. I hope the guys that were chasing cats have better luck than me. No dogs!

This past weekend I was lucky to be out spotting deer in SE Idaho. Found a few nice sheds and had a great time watching deer through the spotting scope. I heard a racket from behind, turned around and watched as someones Husky dog chased 3 different groups of deer from one basin to another. It wasn't casual....he was on a death run and chased a few for probably 3/4 mile till he gave up. I happened to spot the owner on the opposite ridge as he glassed other deer while this was going on. I was disgusted.
Leave your dogs at home if they have a tendency to chase game. He beat me out to the trucks before I could get a liscence.
We will bump deer as we spend time in the hills.....but we can do it responsibly or we can be stupid like this guy and ruin it for all.

i try not to bump deer when i'm in the hills i like to have them spot coyotes for me when i'm calling. though some spots i call i'll see deer 1/2 mile away and they will all spot a coyote coming before i do.
i have more deer come to my calling then run away.
antalope will spot yotes too but in the spring they both will run a coyote off so once the fawns hit the ground i try to stay away from does of both kinds. they are hard to hit with a doe kicking there butt.
i find alot of sheds while calling.
