Hey I'm lookin for a shed dog, what breed do you guys recomend, and is there a good way to train one

From what I have found labs seem to be the best shed dog. I just picked up a yellow lab on Saturday, and am starting to train him. I am not the one to ask about training, I was told how to do it by a friend, but I know there are books that you can read to learn how to train the right way. You want to make sure to get a good dog, one with good hunting blood lines. That will help with trainability and also they seem to have better noses. This is all just my opinion, so take it for what its worth.

I have a black lab, german shorthair mix. He is smart as a whip and loves to find sheds. He found his first one by himself and retrieved it at 4 months old (with very little training at that point) he has only gotten better. Here's his first one.

I was lucky enough to get him for free. In my unbiased opinion :) he is the perfect mix for shed hunting. I think most hunting breeds would work for hunting sheds, though it seems my dog uses his eyes rather than his nose to find sheds (He does sniff out the fresh ones sometimes) so probably a retriever or pointer would be better than a hound. If you have a smart dog that wants to please though, I'm sure that any breed could be trained.

Labs are some of the best for the job. I have a chocolate and he has found tons of sheds. The best thing that i did was i found him a spike antler or small two point and let him chew on it, he gets the scent and will bring back anything with bone marrow in it. play fetch with him and the antler so he knows its good to play with it.

Its not that labs are better than other breeds its just what most people use for shed hunting, they have what i call a round mentality which makes them easy to train for someone that has little or no dog training experience, There smart, high energy and love to please. That being said there are far superior dog breeds for antler hunting than labs in my opinion, Over the last 10 years I have trained lots of dogs for friends and friends of friends to find antlers including labs and German shorthaired, german wirehaired, chessies, weimaraner, bluetick hound, german shepherd ,Akitas and belgium malinois,. And in my opinion the bluetick was the worst for it, all the other breeds were about the same and fairly easy to train for a novice. I liked the chessie he was a powerfull hunter. The German shepherd was good not overly hard to train but getting one from good working lines is a challenge. But By far the best to breeds I have worked with in my opinoin are belgium malinois and akitas.
Akitas are a bit harder to train for a beginner but with guidance it can be done. There only down fall is they are stubborn and independnt minded not good combos for an antler hunting dog. And for that reason they are hit and miss, some times you get a good one sometimes you get a bad one but when get a good one watch out. But by far Malinois are the best I have found they have extreme amounts of drive they love to work they have alot of stamina and love to please and are Highly intelligent, they are antler hunting machines really. That being said they are not a dog for the faint of heart unless you have alot of experience training dogs there not for you and dont try to get one most breeders are very selective who they sell to . They also have to have a job and do not make good house pets unless they have a outlet for there extreme drives. I like to say they are like a ferrari and all other dogs are like a ford taurus if you dont know how to drive one you will wreck it. I will be more than gald to help you out if you want just PM me and I will give you my email and number.

Get a lab out of good working bloodlines and train them just like you would a dog you would use for duck hunting Obedience Force Fetch and then just start teaching them search patterns. Quartering. Orbiting like you would a upland dog or a bomb detection dog and you are good. Get with someone in a Retriever club near you they will be able to help you out. http://cottonwoodretrievers.com/ any dog with good prey drive will work but a lab is just a nice dog to be around and I like nice.
