LAST EDITED ON Jan-24-11 AT 10:13PM (MST)[p]TINEBROTHER, hopefully she will be better than fatrooster's dog! You guys only see Daisy's good days, but believe me she has her bad days too. And there are habits I wish she didn't have. Be consistent and make the antler the most important thing in your dogs life and she will be a great antler dog. I personally have my dogs for home protection first and foremost and a loving pet secondly. Sheds come third in her life and I'm perfectly happy with that. So believe me when I say that she could be much better than she is if I trained for it. I consider having her along as a companion on my shed hunts as being a bonus and her being a decent shed dog as being icing on the cake. Its all about fun, getting into shape and relaxing for me. Good luck and if I can ever help you out let me know.
By the way, she is a good lookin' dog. I like her build and the head looks blocky. Do you have any other pictures of her? fatrooster.

Here is my latest best buddy- also in training. His name is Cody this shot was last sept on the day he was delivered and I knew it was gonna work out just fine as he went straight to the horn pile and dove right in and came out with this one. (3mos. old)

While rifle elk hunting he was out being a puppy and started digging under a down tree and I hissed at him to be quiet and he popped out with a spike in his chompers, even though it was old of course I had to carry it back to camp for a toy.

After a couple days we had a horn tree started back at camp and all this was at 4 months of age.

Cody says to set up a date with those pretty girl dogs...

Is my 6yr old lab too old to learn? I have always taken her with me and she is a great retriever with a good nose but she doesn't show much interest in antlers except if I hide them in the yard.

When we are out shed hunting and I spot one I will tell her to hunt it up and her nose hits the dirt and she will find it but then she really shows no interest in picking them up. I try to get her to but she usually just sniffs them and maybe will mouth it a bit.

Squirrel, that looks like one happy dog!
Lowdog, anything is possible. Go to antlerdogs.com and ask this same question on thier training forum. fatrooster.

Lowedog i just went through exactly what you are talking about. 6 months is pretty early to really expect alot from your pup. If you always make horns her priority soon she will understand. If you talk to big time field trial trainers they don't even start working on anything besides the basics until the dog is 2 years old. if you keep working with her ever day by simply playing fetch with a horn she will figure it out. when you say hunt it up just make sure your consistent. I have taught my dog two major words. "Bird" and "Horn" depending on the season. Find the horn Goose!
