Self-Guided Hunts?

I have seen adds for self-guided hunts from outfitters in different states across the west ranging in price.

Has anybody gone on one of these? If you have or know anything about them, can you share your experiences?

What is ?normally? included in these? I would like to go on a mule deer and/or elk hunt but do not have the 3-5k for a guided hunt.

Any info would be much appreciated.

Thanks

I'm an outfitter, but I've never been on a guided hunt. There's plenty of public land in the west, so if you do some homework, you can ususally find a decent spot to hunt. Many areas get little pressure during bow season, so you'll have lots of choices. There are many spots in Wyoming and Colorado where you can get leftover licenses for deer hunting, and many of those are for archery.

I'd say to pick a spot where you can do some spot and stalk hunting in the west and go for it. Bring your own bedroll and camping stuff and you'll find some folks will help you.

Send me a pm if you need details. Good hunting.

I usually do the public land hunts too, however, if you are looking for a little easier time, there are some decent "tresspass" hunts on private ranches . Some provide a cabin, some just a place to camp, but you do cut down on the competetion by hunting private land. There are some good deals in the $1-2000 range.

Drop camps are ok too and are usually in that same range. However, they are not going to take you to the prime hunting areas usually. With a drop camp, I take their opinion into consideration, but I also do research on my own. This past year, we did a drop camp where all they did was a pack service. We picked the location and we had all our own gear. They only charged 1/2 what they do when they provide the tent and location.

A DIY hunt is not that hard to do. The main thing you have to have is "WANT TO". Send me and e-mail and I will help you all I can.
