rotating inserts

What is the best way to twist an insert? I have some clearance issues with a couple of arrows where a blade on my broadhead (Muzzy 125 3 blade) points straight down and hits the bow's shelf. I need to rotate it a few degrees. I'm assuming I should use heat, but I dont want to ruin an arrow. What is the proper way to do this? Thanks.

Are you using carbons or aluminum arrows? I had this same problem on my old bow and shot aluminum arrows. Heating the insert slowly on an aluminum arrow should not pose any problems and depending on what type of glue you used you should be able to turn the insert without any problems.
I have not tried this with carbons but on carbon arrows you can carefully heat the tip, but do not apply heat directly to the arrow (carbon arrows do not like heat). Heat the tip, wait about 5 seconds and reheat the tip then adjust your insert. The tips do not need much heat before you can turn your insert. You can also get insert installation and removal tools that allow you to get leverage on the insert and allow for proper alignment when installing.

One problem I have had is some arrow man. epoxy the inserts in and you can't heat and spin. I heat up the field tip and pull out insert and then reinsert with glue you can heat up and tune. Don't put heat to the arrow shaft just the tip it takes a bit but the epoxy will finally let go. nwhunter

BigPig:

If you're shooting aluminums, most inserts are installed with hot-melt type glues and can be moved by simply applying heat. If your arrows are XX78's or arrows built with the uni-nock system, you can simply rotate the nock to the desired point.

For carbons, most are installed with epoxy glued inserts and/or super glue type adhesives. If you need to index your carbon arrows, simply rotate the nock instead of your inserts until your blades clear. Hope it helps.

... and then refletch to the new nock rotation :)

ps. someday I'll learn to check my spelling before sending LOL!

Yup C3 is right, with most rests you'll have to re-fletch too to ensure alignment. Just DO NOT heat up carbons and try to rotate an insert like you would an aluminum.

Yup carcon arrows. I do not have the means to refletch and my local bow shop takes forever. Can I get away with heating my tips VERY carefully?

Perhaps an alternative would be to put some teflon tape on the threads which will give you the broadhead offset you are looking for?

I have used this to align broadheads with my fletching.

It messes with arrow weight and perhaps even differences between arrows but it is probably marginal.

Others on the site may be appalled at the suggestion - just an idea from someonw who's fairly green!
