yesterday my grandpa gave me a rack that he found while checking fences in se Id. It has been hanging on his barn for a few years and is white, but still hard and smooth. It does have some hairline cracks, but you have to look close to see them. I have a deer shoulder mount that I would love to put this set on. I haven't stained antlers before and don't want to learn on these. Is there anyone in the salt lake\provo area that does this, and what is the standard fee?
The rack is a 5x5, 28" wide and 23" tall, with deep forks and good mass. I'll post pics soon.

Brandon,
I went ahead and followed your instructions. The antlers were a little older than I had initially thought and had quite a few small cracks. I tested the method out on a shed that was in similar condition. I ended up only applying one layer of stain\mud because the color is quite dark due to the antler condition. They look really good and I just need to go over them with steel wool to finish them. I am verry happy with the results and will post pics soon.
Thanks for the help
Andy

You da man, Browtine. I just mounted an elk for a friend that had left his rack outside for a year and used your method of antler staining. I have stained tons of racks over the last ten years for customers, and have never been able to get results this good. I was waiting to brag about it until the mount was complete and I had pics, but since you were on the subject.... Anyway, thanks for sharing, and I'm sure my customers thank you, too.

Thanks, I got the info from researching this site (and my own attempts). I just stained the 170 set I found in aug.. They turned out awesome. I will also post some pics. I would love to see the results you got nmtaxi. We should make this thread a post of some antler staining technics.

Going to do a set tommorrow of a giant two point. I saw the buck with my Dad in late January. I couldn't make it back to the spot to pick up the sheds so asked if he would look. He rode his mule up there for some excercise, and didn't see them. I made one pass a year later and they were 5 feet apart about 20 yards from where we saw the buck. I wanted to club my father. I wanted those babies brown. Can't wait. I'll post pics when done I hope.

reuben, I would love seeing some of your work. I am glad that this method has worked for everyone. I wish I had learned it sooner as I have ruined (in my oppinion) a few sheds.

Well, after getting quotes of $250+ to put these antlers on an existing mount, I decided to do it myself. It was alot harder than I thought it would be, but it turned out ok. I don't have any before pictures, but the antlers were 10+ years old and white. Thanks for the tips Brandon, I like the results alot. I still haven't put a tape to them, but they look cool no matter what they score..

I worked on those two point sheds. Its awesome Brandon, I love how it turned out. You can't even tell they were stained, especially if you let them vent for awhile. If I get time to get them on a form, I'll get some photos. Thanks again for sharing your method. I highly recommend it.

Nice lookin' job. I wouldn't touch it.

I've never tried it but Van Dykes taxidermy catalog has a fairly cheap antler stain that I've heard comes out pretty realistic. I'm also trying to find some sort of antler stain. The buck I took this year has tape marks around where I put the tag and when I took the tape off it also took some of the color off of the antlers. Has anyone experienced this?
