Rank wyoming moose areas

Bighorn units (#'s 1,42,34,&43) and all the rest are a distant second and lower thanks to the wolf depradation that has and is taking place in the Teton units...

area 38 followed by all the bighorn areas. This summer in the snowy's fishing the bull of my dreams just hung out while I fished. But with having two less than the max, I don't think i will ever draw this area. Friends seen several ok bulls while hunting cow moose in area 26, but not sure how this area really is for bow hunting.

38 hasn't had moose in the unit for long so the quality of forage is evidence in giant antlers in that unit. Unfortunately it is one of the toughest units in the state to hunt due to all the dense timber! I guess that's why there are some monster bulls there.

If you look through the B&C records the units in NW Wyo used to consistently produce the most bulls in the books. Unfortunately predators and successive dry years have put a kink in the B&C bulls shot in those units in recent years. The Bighorns also have potential but tag numbers have increased somewhat and that area has been pounded the past 5 years with super droughty conditions. If you've seen the willows in the Bighorns lately you will see what I mean!

A giant bull can be found in any of these units...but boy can they be tough to find! Put on your hiking boots and get after it!

26 used to be a really good unit, but it has taken a nose dive, like most other NW units in the state. Tag numbers have been cut in half over the last 10 years.

I drew 38 in 04. Shot a bull just over 50". Hopefully I'll draw again sometime in the next 35 years or by the time I hit my 80th birthday. Ya baby...

Just don't see the racks in the Bighorns that I used to see 15, maybe even 10 years ago. A sentiment echoed by several old fart friends familiar with the program here in the neighbourhood.

I need to spend my 13 moose points this year. I'm about ready to toss a coin to decide between 38 or 23/24/26. The latter because my 16 yr old son and I will also be putting in for a G deer tag - 3 points a peice and his first hunt in WY. I know enough of that area and I've seen some fair bulls over the years.

I will archery hunt, then rifle if I need.

So, anyone out there who will accept a bribe (Triple_BB) for some pointers in 38 to help me narrow my search and minimize my scouting time? Please?

Thanks!
Hunt!

13 points is about top of the peckin' order, but 38 and 41 are combined, lots of demand for that neighbourhood for relatively chump change in numbers of tags. Can't say what the draw will dictate this year. Your 24 or 26 may yield a fun hunt for you and your son's G together.

DONT WASTE YOUR TIME IN UNIT 23, I MOOSED HUNTED IT IN 2008 & IT HAS TAKEN A RIDE DOWN HILL THANKS TO THE WOLF POPULATION. THE LOCALS CLUED ME IN WHEN I GOT THERE....PISS POOR NOW....USED TO BE GREAT.............YD.

26 used to hold lots of moose, but it is a tough hunt now as well. Until the wolf issue is resolved I think great moose in wolf ares are a thing of the past! I had a tag in 1995 along with a G deer permit, but even back then, I hunted moose almost exclusively. Getting a bullwinkle is not as easy as it seems, even in the best of units. While you might see a deer, you are not likely to see a decent one in moose country, so splitting your time between two tags is not as exciting as it might seem. I gladly ate my deer tag that year and tagged a decent bull moose, but it took almost a week of hard hunting, even back then.
Good luck on your quest.

there arent many if any wolves in 26 but the hunt isnt that great. had the tag last year, hunted hard and never saw anything 40 inches or bigger. i talked to a lot of people too that didnt even see a mature bull.

You are smart to stay away from 23 and 26. I had a hunter in 23 last season, showed him 40 plus moose. We hunted a wide bull most of the season that I found preseason. Could not figure out why we could not find him...... Well we ended up finding him dead...... The older age class is dying from a brain worm transmitted by black flies. We are seeing that a lot in Western Wyoming and Eastern Idaho. Wolves are not killing very many moose in our area. Wolves don't live long here...............

Friend has a Unit 26 tag last year and in a week of hunting never saw anything even close to 40" but he did see several smaller bulls.

Outta curiosity what is the public land situation like in moose units 38/41? Are they mostly public or private? Just wondering is all...
