"Rack Trap"

maybe some of you co boys can help me. I am gonna build a "rack trap" was just wondering if anyone has built any and what the laws are if any. I am gonna use a mineral block in it so would that be considered "baiting" if im not actually harvesting the animal just the antlers? If any of you guys have any pics of your traps or any good ideas let me know, thanks thanks.
 
you cant set up rack traps, its illegal i thought the same thing but then my greed was pushed aside and i figured it takes all the fun out of it. but some kids got in trouble setting up wire across a draw and herding deer towards it to push them through and they spent some time in the county jail and got heavily fined.
 
Nice first post! But what your asking is kind of an oxy moron with your screen name. Its not hard to find them when they are in a rack trap. Just some food for thought what if the bucks horns aren't ready to come off and gets trapped and dies? Wouldn't that be a form of poaching or worse a shitty way to die! Not bashing on you but going and finding them like good ole non lazy way is to much fun to do that in my eyes.

believe me i beat feet in the spring, miles and miles and i have a great pile to show for it. the trap i saw uses bungee cords. it is just a pan with a roof connected by bungee cords. the video of the one i saw a buck actually did get caught but the soft rubber bungee broke before the buck could even freak out. i have two areas of private land i was gonna put them on, the land is a little far and not one of my regular shed spots.
 
I know of someone that used some oats and stuff, and put it up in as close to a tree trunk as possible. He thought that maybe the bucks antlers would fall off, after rubbing in the tree for a while. Ended up not working. Good luck with your idea.
 
Ding Ding Ding! We have a winner! This is the most ridiculous post I have ever seen... not just on mm, anywhere in my whole entire life! I can't believe you would seriously consider this. Take a step back and think about where in life your priorities got so screwed up that you are willing to risk the life of a deer for it's freaking antlers, when you could realistically go for a walk a couple weeks later and find them. I know, I know, you saw on the internet that they use "soft bungees" and they just break... get real, there's way to many variables in this brilliant idea.

I love to shed HUNT as much as the next guy but the day that I'm no longer HUNTING them and I'm constructing actual traps to RIP the antlers off a deers head is the day I hang up my boots.

Not to mention that this has to be illegal in some way, hope you get caught.

My goodness. Just when I think shed hunting cant get any worse, it does. Every year I think, it cant get any worse and every year it does. I'm starting to eye up a nail on the wall for my boots. I am embarrassed to be a part of what it has become.
 
mineral is considered "baiting" in colorado. so there is an answer to whether or not you should do it...NO
also the trap could probably be considered as harrasing wildlife is the warden really wants to push it
just go try and figure the deer out. finding them with hard work, WALKING, and scouting is more rewarding.
i work for dow and i know for a fact that giving wildlife anything other than water is illegal
 
i know where they are, this property is in a subdivision surrounded by tree huggers that dont pick up the antlers. all of you said the same thing go out and walk. i do every year. forget the subject was just a thought and to shadows i wouldn give a bucket of piss for your opinion. like i care what some ahole like you thinks.
 
Ahahahaha, well first off, I don't know who would want a bucket of piss but... stop bieng angry. It was a dumb idea and somebody needed to tell you, sorry I was the bad guy. Think about it this way, I coulda not said anything, you coulda set up your dumb A$$ trap, you coulda got turned in by one of the tree huggers in the subdivision you are trying to shed RIP in, and you coulda had to pay some hefty fines. The way I see it I think you owe me a big fat THANKS BUD.

Spend more time in the hills and less in the houses, I promise you'll like it more!

I'm going to build a deer pit for the hunts this year about 15' deep with oats at the bottom. If all goes well i will sleep in opening morning and find a nice 4 point with a broken neck at the bottom..... wait new idea... spikes at the bottom too. Wish me luck guys i seen this on the internet.
 
Hey don't forget to post up warning signs all around your death pit wouldn't want any hunters falling in that pit of yours wouldn't be good.

findem, I watched a couple videos on youtube. Didn't look like it worked all that great. If you are in an area where you can feed deer, do it. Maybe trying to keep them on your property in general would be a more successful plan.

killer calm down man just cause you dont like my idea doesnt mean its not good or possible. You shouldn threaten people if i was harrasing or chasing wildlife i would kick my own ass. I have better hunting and outdoor ethics than to do anything like that. I am out there like most beatin feet and scouting animals i have already explained why I came up with this idea but after doing research I have learned it is not legal due to feeding or "baiting" animals. All i ever wanted to learn was if anyone had ever had or built one. I dont really care what you do or how you do anything as long as it doesnt effect my safety or the safety of my friends and family so you need to let it go. I dont want to spend my time watching my back out in the woods because some guy didnt like my idea or my question. That is not what these forums are about so next time before you or anyone starts pokin fun or calling people out just remember this is a free country (thank god) and everyone has different views. This reply is not talking sh@# or bashing so lets move on and go out and pick up some bone!!!

I know a guy that had a 240 buck coming into his yard for months. He built himself a "racktrap", and in no time the sheds were laying there by his back door. Point is, it should work whether anybody likes it or not.
 
Looks like it could work, The deer get to eat and it don't look like any one is scaring the deer and making them die.

"I have found if you go the extra mile it's Never crowded".
 
Didn't know there was such a thing out there. Not a bad idea for an old man making a living off of bone.. Knife handles, Antler art ETC. But for me personally would just take away that rush of watching a buck and or elk for weeks then picking up its sheds on the mountain
