Had an awesome weekend trip. Met up with my buds Richard and Robert of Out West Guides and Outfitter. Killed the javeilna first thing Friday night, not 40 minutes after arriving. 23 yard shot, slightly quatering away. Ran 80 yards, teeter tottered for a few minutes and tipped over. Those dudes have javelina figured out!
The Sitka Mountain Gear in Mothwing camo is by far the best hunting clothing I've ever used. It's great for this type of active, spot and stalk hunt. You can nicely layer it with their Summit or Mountain Shirt, Timberline Vest and 90% Jacket to be plenty warm in the morning, but still wick sweat and be nice and cool when the mid day sun heats up. Perfect for a hunt like this when it's 35 in the morning and 65 during the day. Mothwing is one of the best camo patterns I've used in open terrain, especially in the desert with the dark limbs of the mesquite and the grey cat claw shrubs.
Then I missed that bomber buck in the photo this morning. Check his width! Stalked him twice. Got to 50 yards after glassing him up from 800-1000 yards away. Took me an hour to stalk around and come down from on top of him and his does. Misread my landmark and came out 50 yards away. I was solo, which made it tough. If I had had a spotter across the canyon, he'd be caped out and at the taxi man now. Anyhow, he had me pegged already and bailed as I started to draw. I hauled back across the wash and cut him off near the top of the small cut he was working up. Worked almost perfect. Had him at 65 and working closer to me when a truck pulled up on the road 250 yards above me. They spooked. I grunted and stopped him, took a long poke and missed low. Total bummer.
If you look close in the pic (click on it and it comes up bigger) you might be able to just barely see pink fletching. He had an arrow stuck in him. It was just in front of his hips and above the spine. It didn't look to be bothering him too much. I later talked to the guy in the truck and he had been hunting that buck for weeks. He said the arrow has been in him since Jan 1. Tough critters for sure. I'm going to try to make it back in two weeks to catch the end of the rut. I've got a score to settle.
God made javelina for bow hunters. It's about the most fun you can have with a bow in your hand. Richard has the So. AZ desert wired and if you want to kill a javelina or deer, he is THE guy to hunt with. PM me if anyone wants contact info.
