QUALITY CONTROL?

Is there any Quality Control left in this Country?

I ordered some Redwood from a local Supplier a couple weeks ago!

I looked through their Redwood then & it's been Picked over & not much useable for a Deck!

The Gal said She could place my order & have it delivered in & assured me it would be better wood!

So today I stopped by & She says They have my wood!

So I goes & gets a Trailer & back down I go to get my Redwood!

Get down there & the Owner thinks I'm gonna load the Left-Overs/Picked through/around the corner Junk nobody will buy!

They didn't order my Redwood in!

I tells the Owner I gotta have something better than that!

So now He's got an attitude!

He goes & pulls a New Bundle & We open it up!

Some of this Brand New Redwood right out of the new Bundle is so crooked I wouldn't of hauled it home if they'd have gave it to me!

He didn't like it,but I picked through & found the Straightest/Best 22- 2 X 6 X 16's I could find,believe me,they ain't nothing neat!

Some of them should'of never left the Mill!

And yes I know straight 16' footers in any kind of wood are hard to come by but GEEZUS I remember when I was younger there was some good Lumber back then!

GOOD GAWD what's this world coming to?

Do You Remember when Redwood used to be Red?

This modern day JUNK Redwood is cut out of new growth Trees & it's more White than Red!

I own a stand of redwood trees I'd be willing to sell you.

If you were ordering the Con Common grade you will get A LOT of the sap (white) wood. This part of the redwood tree is less resistant to bugs and rot. You would be better off ordering Con Heart redwood as it will be all red (kinda pink now) and is generally more stable than Con Common. If the grade does not include the word "Heart" in it then you WILL get the sap wood. The second (and third) growth redwood is not as good as the first growth stuff but that is the way it is. All you can do is go to places that know something about wood and work with them. This will mean staying away from the BIG BOXES- their redwood is crap for the most part.

I know it's a stretch but.........have they seen wood substitute materials in Utah?

Lasts longer, low maint and easier to install.......not to mention, environmentally practical. Fire retardant and zero rot issues.

The quality of available lumber is low for several reasons. There just ain't as much as there was 30 years ago.......sort of like deer, elk, etc.......

Also, the premium grade, old growth stuff is almost always shipped to Japan.

Looks good at first but after a couple years it looks like Crap!

When you get done building it don't forget to trim the bushes around the edges, it will make your deck look bigger.

Bobcat, if your Redwood is on size with square edges.....it wasn't my saws that cut it.

It's hard to find a straight 16' 2x6. The wood is of poor quality and nobody knows how to cut for grade much any more, which makes it worse. The good news is it will usually bend enough to where you can straighten it out. Cut up the ones with too much crook. I wouldn't span over 24" either.

I live in Redwood country and my next deck will be Trex.

We got thousands of acers of old growth Redwoods in parks around here. All the trees are rotting into the ground. Too cold and damp and dangerous to camp in. Stop and snap a photo is about all they're good for.

It's not worth buying redwood these days. I would either go with trex or concrete patio. Millions of board feet of redwood sit and rot in the parks near my home. Makes me sick. You could cut and harvest all the wood up to 100 yards from the highway and 99.99999999% of our population wouldn't know it. They drive through and look out the window and stop and get out at one of the big trees next to a turnout and take a pic then get back in the car and leave.
