Here in CO the BLM has closed the winter ranges that most of the deer and elk winter on. Hoping to give them a chance to regain some strenght after such a hard winter. It has warmed up some but still there is a lot of snow hanging around. They closed it until April 30. Fines and jail time follow if anyone is cought in this area for any reason.

Jail time? Come on...that's YOUR way of telling everyone to stay out. Cripes, you don't even get jail time for shooting a moose without a license. Think a hiker is going to jail for being on public land? That's pretty clever on your part...

Did they just close the Gunnison unit, or did they also close other areas? I'm glad to hear that they are doing what they can to protect those deer.

Toughshed,
First of I think it immature how you like to stir up crap on this site when most of the time you don't know what your talking about. There is big sign posted on the roads leading into all the closed BLM. They have a box with maps and info on the closure. And a sheet with the penalties entering the closed area.
Since you don't get it I will write it out just how it reads on the BLM News Release.
PENALTIES: The authorities for this closure are section 303(a) of the Federal Land Policy and Management Act of 1976 (43 U.S.C. 1733(a)) and 43 CFR 9268.3. Any person who violates this closure may be tried before a United States Magistrate and fined no more than $1000.00 or imprisoned for no more than 12 months, or both. Such violations may also be subject to the enhanced fines provided for by U.S.C. 3571.
Not my way of telling people to stay out its the Federal Governments way!! I posted because I think it is great how the DOW and BLM work together when they see the need to help our wildlife through a tough year.

It's a hard pill to swallow for us who are addicted to picking up sheds when big brother closes off public land BUT IF they enforce the closure with real penalties the wildlife do benefit!!! A big scary sign will not be enough to detour some!

I sat at a new road closd sign last spring deciding where else to go insted. As we sat there two kids pulled up then quickly unloaded their 4wheeler then rode off around the sign into the closed area!!! I picked up the cell phone and reported them. I had license plate number and all! I followed up the next day but they just explained how under staffed they were with only one inforcement officer in the whole district!!!
Nothing was done at all, without enforcement only the dishonest will benefit!

Time in the hills is always worth more than money

I think there should be a shed hunting season in every state, and let the critters be until winter is long gone.I enjoy shed hunting as much as the next guy but i would rather let the game stay heathy and put the bone back on the head so i have a chance at harvesting them in the way there ment to be harvested, more challenging to get a big old muley buck in his habitat then when there trying to just survive, give'm a break!!

jcmuley what part of colorado are you in? I am heading to rangely this weekend to find some bone wondering if you can shed some details on this closure and what units are closed? pm me if you need to

thanks

Really. I don't know what I am talking about? Hmmm.

OK. Thanks for the great info. You aren't in the Gunnison area. OK.

Yeah, I'm really stirring it up and starting crap I don't know anything about. Fine.

Nice try.

And just so you know, the Gunnison closure is every year and has nothing to do with mule deer. But I don't know anything. Ask jc muley to fill you in on shed hunting laws. He's been following it real close.

Why aren't you sure? You are spouting off like you know everything? Too busy to keep up with what's going on? Why don't you tell us where the lands are closed? How about a picture Mr. Know it all?

He's not gonna tell you. I'll help you. Don't listen to folks on this board if you want facts. Get them yourself.

toughshed, I don't know if you believe in karma but if you do and say things in a positive manner the bucks on your wall just might get bigger...just a little food for thought "tough"shed

If someone unloaded a four wheeler at a closed road sign and drove around the sign, I would let the air out of all 4 truck tires and call the sheriff or forrest service. Tell them to bring a pump and their ticket book.

Alright JC, maybe you just overstated the issue slightly. A quick interent search results in the following closures

http://www.blm.gov/co/st/en/BLM_Information/newsroom/2008/land_managers_revise.html

all in the Gunnison area and well publicized. Nowhere does the BLM threaten anyone with jail time. Maybe you didn't read that most Colorado jails are full to bursting at the seams.

I took issue with your statement because it was so far over the top. No offense but let's try to post information that is factual and accurate.

And you said you weren't in the Gunnison area. Why don't you pm me and tell me where these closed public lands are? I promise to never shed hunt there :)

toughwhatever,
I never said anything about any other areas. I was only talking about the area that I am in. If you are so worried about it look it up on the blm web site. Funny that you say the closure in the gunnison units has nothing to do with mule deer when the DOW says it has everything to do with mule deer. I understand that they also close certain areas to help the sage grouse.
Man I don't want to bicker with you about it. I said what I did because this time of year is a vulnerable time for most wildlife and I am glad that the DOW and BLM saw the need to close areas around here to keep the floods of shed hunters out of prime winter range. I'm sure the deer and elk are lucky to be in a sage grouse unit because without the sage grouse none of the areas would get closed. Regardless of the reason the blm land around here is closed. Go to www.blm.gov/co and select Uncompahgre on interactive map to see the closed areas.

toughshed,
I did post the facts. What I wrote in my first post to you about the penalties was straight out of the BLM Press Release.
The area that I am talking about is the Gunnison Gorge National Consevartion Area. Closed areas include Black Ridge and Fruitland Mesa east of the Gunnison Gorge Wilderness, west of Black Canyon Road, south of Smith Fork drainage and the north of BLack Canyon of the Gunnison National Park.
The whole jail time and fines may be just the blm's scare tactic I don't know. I'm not going to find out. What I posted was what was on the sign and on their Press Release Paper.
Enough said!
Good luck shed hunting!!
JC

Hey JC...whatever you originally said, you have now clarified that you were in the Gunnison area and you are correct it is off limits to all human activity including motorized vehicles.....which I already knew for reasons I won't go into.

No one is going to jail for being on public land that is closed. That's my opinion...fined yes, jail no..

Most public land is and has been open all winter. Whether it is ethical is another question.

Good luck and no hard feelings.
