let me start by saying first time poster, long time reader....now it really got me going just reading a post from a ut.free nv. and the on going quad saga. what exactly is the problem with quads off roading? is that really the biggest problem with the deer heard numbers? is that really the cause of habitat destruction? do you think that losing over 1/2 of the area 6 (nevada) winter range, 85% area 8 (nv), Jarbridge wilderness, to fires could contribute. what about pequopes just south of I-80 in long canyon....that is about to turn into a big mine tailing pile. those of you that know that area know what i am talking about. what about a deer crossing on 93 north out of wells that did no get completed before the migration. they were sure to get a 5 mile 8 ft. fence up with in the middle of the route before the migration started. I witnessed several deer stuck on the west side of the fence and on the highway confused, stressed, and dead. Also i will bet that a quad ruins less habitat than a beef cow. Just look at the scars on the land fron hundreds of cows using a watering hole If we are worried about stress on these animals maybe cancel hunting seasons and allowing these creatures to bread without harassment and stress. sorry guys if i went off but i thing there are more problems to worry about than quads off road. these are just a few points to think about and please dont judge me over my first post. i do not shed hunt. I do enjoy quad riding. and we all want the best for the critters.

What ATV folks have to say about it:

4WD NSW & ACT Code of Ethics
The Association Code of Ethics has been around for a long time. It is up to every member of every club to ensure they and fellow members, understand and adhere to this code.

For example in accordance with Rule 10, 'respect the rights of others', don't run night trips near populated area's where the noise carries for kilometres.
In regards to Rule 5, 'carry your own and other rubbish out', means pick up not just your own rubbish, but clean up the area.
4WD NSW & ACT Code of Ethics
Obey the laws and regulations for recreational vehicles that apply to public lands.
Respect the cultural, heritage and environmental values of public/private land by obeying restrictions that may apply.
Respect our flora and fauna. Stop and look but never disturb.
Keep to formed vehicle tracks.
Keep the environment clean. Carry your own and any other rubbish out.
Keep your vehicle mechanically sound and clean to reduce the environmental impact.
Adopt minimal impact camping and driving practices.
Seek permission before driving on private land. Do not disturb livestock or watering points, leave gates as found.
Take adequate water, food, fuel, basic spares and a first aid kit on trips. In remote areas travel with another vehicle and have Royal Flying Doctor Service or equivalent radio contact.
Enjoy your recreation and respect the rights of others.
Plan ahead and lodge trip details with a responsible person.
Support four wheel drive touring as a responsible and legitimate family recreational activity. Consider joining an affiliated four wheel drive Club.

RE: What ATV folks have to say about it:

I think if atv riders (and everyone for that matter) would stick to this code of ethics, there would be no issue. The problem is that many (it seems like most) of all riders don't follow any of these. They can be extremely desructive and disrespectful. I hope more will apply this code of ethics in the future.

bullnrut,
You are 100% correct, ATV's running all over Nevada's countryside (and any state for that matter), isn't the BIGGEST problem our deer herds are facing. HOWEVER, when you pile that on top of all of the problems that you mentioned, it just increases the amount of stress that these animals are already under. As individuals we can't control which range burns down, as individuals we can't ensure that a migration corridor will be built before the next years migration (government works slowly), and because of something called the General Mining Act of 1872 an individual can't really stop the side of a mountain from turning into a tailings pile, BUT as an individual we sure as hell can keep ourselves from running ATVS in places where its obvious they don't belong.

I guess I just don't understand the appeal of running a four wheeler cross country, a little too bumpy for me.

Its lonely at the top.... just the way I like it.

shadow you are part right as well. it does feel like we can not control some aspects but you can if you are creative enough. but we do have say in the mentioned above. we can have a word in the "NEW MINING REFORM" . you did mention stress on these animals....is it me or does hunting cause stress? let 20 people try to pain ball your a$$ while to are courting your loved one. Let me know how far you get..lmao. does hundreds of tards watching a HUGE bull cause stress? does several weekend warriors hitting the best wintering grounds for horns cause unwanted stress? even if they are all on foot? if we are all concerned about stress on the deer then why are you out gathering horn? Guaranteed while you are on foot you bump deer. just so you know i use to shed hunt until i got bumped out of my honey hole. i could pick up several brown and whites with my kids and have a great time....then the quads came...i got real frustrated and quit and i regret not trying to stop them. i regret not trying the stop any of the above.
