Price sheds....

Ok I was going to ask a question about shed hunting in a certain area, but knowing the sensitivity of the subject, and wondering if anyone would be willing enough to give true, accurate info I am not going to ask it.

Its a pretty touchy subject about where to find sheds or where you have found them, or where you have some big boys spotted dont you guys think? I know people who have scared others away with a gun because they were shed hunting in "their" spot.

Is the obsession getting out of control with some people or is it just me?

Way out of control would be more like it.

Hmmm... Our winter ranges... I'm glad they have the poachers narrowed down to the nonresidents. Problem solved....

My thoughts exactly, good thing they narrowed that down. Which state was that? Pretty funny pic, thanks for the reply.

The whole antler thing has become hudge these last few years. Mostly because we advertise it. Like many of you I have been hunting sheds for about 15 yrs. Back in the "good ole days" we waited for the bucks and bulls to drop and then go hunting. Now we go when we see the first buck with 1 horn. The last few years the magazines, internet and videos have exploded with pictures of hudge sheds. The more we show the more that go. It's fun to see the pics don't get me wrong i look at this site all the time and love to see the brown on the ground. But every pic we show is FUEL for someones fire!!! Just my take.

I'm guessing that sign is in Wyoming...when I've been out that way I've had a guy give me crap (just once). The way I look at it is I buy gas and lunch while I'm out there...adding to there economy.

The sign probably is from wyoming, which is where i am from. But i am going to have to say that shed hunting is becoming to popular for people with less ethics. There are to many people that want to get into it so they go buy a four wheeler and go boondocking through the sagebrush way to early in the season not giving a crap, that's why i think they should put a seaosn on it as well as close all two track roads and what not till about middle of march beginning of april. But as far as the whole "utahns keep out thing" i don't really care who comes to wyoming to look for antlers as long as they are ethical about it, because public land is open to everyone; nothing a person can really do about that.

Thanks for the posts, I know people have alot of strong feelings about shed hunting and I agree maybe some restrictions would be helpful to keep the land and animals from being overrun. I wouldnt know where to start with the restrictions maybe you guys have some good ideas about what might help.

Thanks

I actually had to wait 8 hours until I got off work to give myself enough time to calm down before replying to this post. I was hot when I seen that sign. The locals are beating the bush 7 days a week up there once the sheds drop and pick up more sheds than all the guys coming in from out of state on the weekends. So to be so blatently ignorant as to who pushes the deer more just blows my mind. Are there guys from UT abusing the priveledge? You bet. But that percentage is small to the percentage of locals trying to pick up the sheds from the bucks they have been living with for weeks on end. The guy that put that sign up is a TARD. Probably so dumb he had to sell a good set to have someone print it for him. Just a very few of my thoughts on this subject.

You know that guy put that sign up in the middle of the night on a Wednesday when no one was around......or had his wife do it while he made sure no one was coming!

Rumple,
If you are asking about shed hunting around the Price area, I will be willing to give you all of my old shed spots. I would guess that they are no secret anymore, but I don't get back to see my mom and step dad as oftin as I use to, so I'll give them up to the next guy. Just one spot I will not give up. my stepdad found it while hunting sheep this year, and I have not had time to go out and gather up all the elk sheds he left. One day when I come back you can take me out to one of your spots.
send me a PM, and I'll start sending the info.

Woa, woa, woa there Shon! Since when did you start helping guys that want to look for sheds? :D

I think I'm going to take up stamp collecting.

Josh,
Not to sound like a dejected highschool girl, but you never called me last weekend. I sat by the phone all weekend and nothing. From your post above you must have been with someone
else, so Leggo-my-Eggo. I'll tell you what I'll do. I'll put it up on this board, so everyone has the same chance to go fight eachother for the same 4 year old fork horn shed.

By the way, I was out bird hunting last Sat. and found US a new spot, I picked up 14 sheds in a couple hours.

Shon

Ok

NVMDF2, you are going to have to tell me how to send a PM. I know how to check them but I dont know how to send them. I think we could benefit from a little info swap.

OK, you caught me. :D I had a date with a gal named Enza, more commonly known as Influenza. Been down for a while. I would have called but I'm barely getting my voice back now. Horrible cold/flu. I'll give you a ring this evening. A buddy sent me that photo of the sign. Thought it fit the topic of this post perfectly.

How were the birds? You didn't get shot at by that old boy up in the ledges did you?

'It's all about the gut pile'

Dang Shon, you think you know a guy! First you give up your old shed hunting areas, then you go bird huntin' without me, and you hang around with SneakAttack? Where do I start?? How have the birds been this year? Pretty good on this side of the line.

I was down to Price in March (2005) and went up Nine mile canyon. I saw some bucks that still had head gear. One good four point up some canyon. Didn't look for sheds that day. Went down to look at the petroglyphs. Awesome country...

Has anyone else seen the madhouse down there by Price when shed hutning happens? I dont think there is a place you can go without seeing a 4wheeler, horse, or human track. I know guys who are trying to train their dogs to find sheds and they take them out and let them run around and bring them the sheds they run into. Crazy, I dont know if anywhere else is as crazy as there that place is nuts.

That should help the deer herds (dogs running around the range looking for sheds)!

Seems like its time for some restrictions, maybe no shed hunting until April? No off roaders? No loose dogs? Seems like a good place to start.

Just hope everyone doesn't find the canyon where I found a 95" 5 point!

idhunters,

In parts of Wyoming they have roads closed till May 1st. When we show up on May 1st all we see in the sage is ATV tracks (they are killing of the winter range with those dang things). Come April if they did that those people that are causing us grief would have the entire place cleaned out by the time we got in. It will take some serious Law-enforcement to get things to stick if they make rules on shed hunting. Something needs to be done...but it will take a lot of people enforcing it.
